Re: I have never owned Ford, but I would be pretty upset if they refused to
Sure is strange, we run the edge with no problems! I think it has more to do with folks running these things like hotrod gassers! If you don't let the engine completely warm up and go mash on the throttle like a gasser bad things will happen!

I am sure there is much more to this story than originally posted. I'd like to hear from the friend himself

He has owned nothing but Ford diesels for 15 years, so he is well-versed on the intricacies of the diesel motor as well as turbo maintainance. We have 4 Ford 7.3 diesel work trucks and 4 Cummins Dodges and have had no real problems with anything except trannies before. I advised him to appeal it to the regional office of Ford and if that doesn't work, you can request a hearing with a state mediatior.
Are there any lawyers that are just plain out-to-get Ford that he could contact?

Sounds like a plan. Do a google search about lawsuits against fd and see if there are any that originated in your state. There is a long distance between here and there. The dealer will pull the engine and partially disassemble it, and then an engineer will come out to look it over. Even with the negative nature of my posts, he may determine that a head or block cracked or something not fuel related. Wait to see what they say then go from there. This thread has given you a taste of what your buddy may have to go through if things go very wrong. It just may work out and the failure had to do with a poor casting or something like that, it has happened before. I remember a guy on the 7.3 forum blew an engine and it turned out the engine sucked in a freeze plug mounted in the head. They fought him at first then gave in and replaced the engine.

They brought in a Ford guy and when he saw the plugged bung for the EGT sensor, he voided the warranty on the motor and refused to look further to see what failed.

Okay, you are telling me they voided the whole engine warranty just because they saw where an EGT probe had been mounted? They didn't even say there was a box on there ? Holy cow, Ford is getting very trigger happen on denying these warranties.
However, I have to agree with others. Fords fault or his fault is now irrelevant. He shouldered all fault once he put that box on the engine. Now the onus is on him to prove it didn't cause the engine to fail.
The argument that the engine seiezed up when Ford service had it won't hold water either. That engine was already messed up by the time they got it. That's like sayin that you may have shot a guy, but since he died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital that the county is responsible for his murder.

Did He Say That He Had A Box On It. I Took Mine In With A EGT Bung For The Sensor & Ford Did Not Say One Word About When My Motor When Out But The Valve Train Came A Part And Took A Cylinder Out. I Would Look Futher Into This.
Good Luck With It
