I saw a youtube video on removing the air filter housing, but he removed the whole thing. Can the filter element be changed without taking the entire assy out?
I'm not sure when the filter was changed and my mileage seems to be dropping....thought I'd change it out.
Thanks, jed

There is no need to remove the entire filter housing! All you need to change is the internal filter. Make sure you use a 36mm socket and not the inside square area. If you do use the inside you may damage the cap (about $35.00 mistake). Also when you buy the filter it comes with an "O" ring, use it!
Unsnap the two clips and with some force push the front end cap as far forward as possible the do the same with the rear. Once you have them apart pull the center oval part up and out. There is a filter miner on the filter. If it does not say to replace it i would not worry about it. The oem filters have been known to last will into the 100k range. Your mileage drop is more likely due to the cold weather and conversion to winter fuels. The addition of Kerosene to the diesel drops the diesels BTU content and in turn drops mileage. If you do change the air filter make sure to put the motorcraft back in. It is many times superior to anything else out there, including the popular high performance filters which have been known to cause issues... Once you have the filter out you will see there are tabs on the end caps that must be seated into the air filter before you can snap the retaining clips back down. Also be sure to be careful with the clips they do come off...

Thank you very much. Got it. Regarding the winter blends, would they do that in all areas even though the temps won't usually get below 30?
thanks, jed

Many people don't trust the filterminder, but IMO it works. Does it show the air filter to be plugging? These air filters can hold 3 lbs of dirt and go 75k to 100k miles.
The filter assembly is built by Donaldson- they make their living by manufacturing HD filters for on/off road equipment. Most mining and construction fleets use filter restriction to service air filters- the service indicators definitely work. Funny how people fall into the marketing trap that air filters need to be replaced often. A HD filter like in the F series isn't at design efficiency until partially loaded with dirt. Changing too often actually lets more dirt into your engine- both from opening the housing and from passing through the paper in the element.

Not sure how to tell if it's "plugging" or not. The minder looks fine, I guess. I see a little red on one end and yellow on the other....a spring in the middle.
Previous owner was a farmer who stayed in dusty fields. I'm not sure if it's ever been changed in 164k miles.

As your filter plugs, it ppulls a vacuum on the filter minder. The vacuum pulls on the inner parts of the filter minder and the indictaing disk moves towards the filter. It can be reset by pushing the button on the end. If it has sucked in half way, I would probably be considering a replacement. An internet search will give you a pictoral guide on how to read the filter minder.
The real determining factor of changeing the filter is the working environment. If the truck works in a high dust environment then you need to shorten you change interval.
Our fleet works every day in a high fine/dust environment. Trucks are serviced every 450 hrs of operation. They don't move much so mileage is useless. They run 16 to 24 hrs a day. For oil spill clean up its 24/7.
By the way that 3lb is not an exageration I routenaly can get a 1/2 of a 5 gal bucket of dirt out of the 6.0's filters.

Got it. Did the research.....if my minder is working, I should be okay. Thanks for help.

Thanks. Kind of what this truck has been in. Very dusty fields.
