Air Filter Quesiton

I know there was recently a post on the stock air filter, but I have searched for it to no avail. I just got my filters in from Filter1, and would yall please give me some feedback regarding the Wix air filter. Is it okay to use with regards to performing just like the stock one? I remember a gentleman that posted about the stock one and he was the engineer that had a hand in it. Thanks in advance for the help!

Re: Air Filter Quesiton

Has anyone had trouble removing the air filter? my friend and I worked on his 03 6.0L and haven't got it out yet. Unclipped the 4 clips and it seems to be stuck at the bottom on both ends. Can't seem to get enough clearance at the bottom ends of the filter .
Thanks: Outfront/MI.

Just Riiipppppppppp it out . There are tabs that lock on the bottom of the filter. It is hard to get them pulled out. Taking the whole system out is supposed to be the easiest because of clearance issues. Have Fun .

Re: Air Filter Quesiton

How many miles are on your truck? The stock filter is supposed to be a 100k filter! I have 21k on mine and the filter minder has barely moved. You should be able to get at least 50k from the stock filter.

Re: Air Filter Quesiton

Remove the MAP sensor and the tubing to it. It will give you more room to work the filter out.

Re: Air Filter Quesiton

There is only 30K on the truck, surprised the oil analysis said abnormal silcon level, the level was 51. Will try and remove Sat.
Didn't realize there were tabs at the bottom.
Thanks for the info,Outfront/MI.

Just pull straight up on it and it will come loose but it is hard. I am not sure how long air filter is supposed to last but many on here claim that they changed theirs shortly after 25,000 and saw a increase in fuel mileage. Air filter gage is for decoration only, have not heard of anyone have their show filter is clogged.

Good Luck

Re: Air Filter Quesiton

Take 30 mins and take out what you need - usually that's most of the ductwork up to the turbo. When you've done it once, it is easier.

Keep in mind that Visteon is coming out with a replacement airbox that's supposed to be easier than the stock one sometime this summer.

I believe you are referring to jflagstad. He may chime in here himself, but as I understand it, the WIX filter is OK to use unless you're operating in a high carbon (soot) environment (lots of smoke?). The WIX I have is branded with "PowerCore" logo, and the only difference is that it has the white media instead of the blue like the Ford OEM element uses. The diff being that the white media has a slightly lower dust loading ability and doesn't handle high soot environments as well. The blue color is supposedly the Ultrafiber layer or whatever they call it.

The air filter is supposed to be changed at 30k according to the PSD supplemental manual. Most find it goes between 20 & 30k Changed mine @ 27k and really had no change in performance). The Wix filter is great. & at $40 from Filter1.com a very good value.

Re: Air Filter Quesiton

Once more, from the top.... about 5 minutes to R&R air filter.

Undo the clips and remove them.... you will lose one. Lift up on the clean air bell and pull it towards the rear. Lift the filter from the grommets ( a sharp tug usually does it) and position the spot for the tangs inside the clean air bell.

Lift up on the dirty air bell and, tipping the rear of the filter up, position the spot for the tangs inside the dirty air bell. Lift the filter up and out... reverse the process for installation. The only tool I use is a little screwdriver to pop the clips out.

It's real easy to make this job a lot tougher than it needs to be.

Re: Air Filter Quesiton

Thanks, Grampy! You really have some great information for us.

Here is a link to the discussion with info on the OEM air filter engineering: OEM Filter Design Info

So, should I order my air filters from filter1.com or buy an OEM air filter?

As far as oil filters, my understanding is that the OEM Motorcraft and filter1.com WIX oil filters are identical in every respect except for the label.
