Well here we go, I haven't had any problems with my truck as of yet and I'm hoping against hope this is a fluke, but anyway....
I just started my truck, which has been sitting for awhile and driven rarely for the past 2 weeks (took a vaca) and although it's a little brisk outside at best, by no means is it cold. The truck started, but sounds a little rough. I figured oh well, it did that last winter, and it runs crappy for about 1 min till its warmed up then it runs great....
Well I backed it up and was trying to turn around and get back up my driveway to pull it into the garage, and... it can't make it. It has almost no power at all - regardless of gear. So it's just sitting in the driveway hangin out till it gets warmed up and hopefully then it'll go again?
What the heck happened? Again it's fall I know but it's maybe 65* outside. Why would this happen all of a sudden?
Yep, sure enough, I just went back out and after letting it idle for about 2 minutes, it runs just fine. What the H? It's like unless it's warm and toasty outside the truck acts like it's in an Alaskan blizzard.
Sounds like its starving for fuel. Possible dirty intake, fuel filter or gummed up injectors?
As a minimum, have you checked oil level, air filter, fuel filter?
Consider injector cleaner additive.
To be more clear, I shouldn't say it had no power, rather, it didn't even attempt to let me go. I said go, it said NO! ... When I first started it up, and tried to drive it up my driveway, I put my foot to the floor and it didn't even rev.
But then once it idled for a few minutes fine again. I am using Stanadyne Performance Formula and have been now for a little while, and I really like the stuff. As for the oil, I just changed it about a week ago, and haven't gone hardly anywhere since. All levels are good, and I'm nowhere near due for fuel filters again yet.
?? I really dunno what it is, because it's been doing this for a while I think - it's not always that bad - but anytime it's even cool outside and you start it cold there's at least a fair chance it's gonna run like total GARBAGE for about 1 or 2 minutes then it's great again. Sometimes when I first pull out of my driveway I have to manually shift it into 3rd otherwise it just will not shift by itself - again, until it warms up, and then it runs great.
With temps in the 40's or 50's (f), when started cold, mine will get out of the driveway, but a minute down the road it has a hard time pulling away from the stop sign. It will leave the intersection likes its towing 12,000 pounds and the RPM will go up to around 2500 and no amount of pedal will increase it. Shifts are extremely harsh. Once it warms up, however, it runs like a scolded dog.
This is the first it's done this routine. Not even below zero temps of previous winters here in the frozen tundra of Wisconsin have caused this. Daily driver is the motorcycle, so it's just been out of the garage a few times here in the last two weeks as roads have been getting slick.
No tuners or programmers have ever been used on this truck. Drive train is totally stock, and I've been using PowerService DieselKleen satisfactorily for years.
My truck was very sluggish cold. I couldn't drive over a pebble without warming the truck up for 5 minutes. Dealership replaced two injectors and reflashed the computer, now I can start and go in all temps.
Neil.

Update:
Found an applicable TSB (TSB 07-5-4, since superseded by TSB 09-7-11) that described issues I was experiencing. So I took the truck in yesterday to have most current flash applied. I was previously on flash 06E17. Tech couldn't find a specific calibration for the current flash(anybody??), but I know he was using IDS release 63.08.
Brought it home and let it sit overnight and then took it for a test run today. Unbelievable difference! No mechanical work was done - just the PCM and FICM were updated. It's back to being very pedal responsive on cold startup, and once again runs nice and smooth!
Next we'll do a fill-up and see if the mileage changes appreciably...
