Alternator question

Just read a post about batteries and someone said that their volts read 13.4 while running. My Outlook monitor reads 12.9 to 13.1 while running down the road... Is this normal, the Outlook, or is my Alt. slowly dieing. I have noticed if I turn up my stereo(which consists of 2 amps) it will drop to 12.9 and stay there even at 2200rpms going down the road. Any info is always appreciated. Thanks.

Check your monitor against a digital voltmeter running off the power plug maybe?

Re: Alternator question

Depending on what accessories the OP has running at the time, 13.4 may not be bad.... If he had any of this stuff:

[ QUOTE ]
Alpine IVAD300 Flip out DVD player, Alpine 5 channel amp, Boston Acoustic Z6 speakers, JL Audio 12W7 Sub., JL Audio 500.1 amp

[/ QUOTE ] running at the time, it coud account for a lot of that power draw....

Re: Alternator question

Yes Roper it was all running BUT volume was on 0. Wether or not the drop would be that bad from them being on vs. them being on and turned up loud drawing more power, I don't know. Tell you what, I have to go out in a little bit and I'll turn everything off and check then post. Thanks for all the help everyone.....

Re: Alternator question

Roper.... it's never read 13.4 Always 13.1 to 12.9 since I started checking it in Dec since I first kinda killed my batts partying in the cul-de-sac. The next am I switched the Outlook to voltage mode.

Re: Alternator question

Maybe your cables are cut alittle (frayed), which would cause a voltage drop.

Ok, if it checks out the same whether the other stuff is on or off, then you may have another issue. One thing I would check is the battery cable nearest your hot side IC tube (passenger side). When I changed out my alternator earlier this year, that cable had been rubbing on the IC tube. If yours is and has rubbed through, it might be affecting the alternator's ability to work right. If everything there checks out, then it's likely your alternator is fixing to take a dump on ya....

(BTW, I am running the amp in my sig, a Sirius Sportster 4 radio and a fairly high power CB on mine. My voltage according to my AIC is usually in the mid to high 13's while running down the road. At a stop light, it may drop into the low 13's... If that helps ya at all...)

Re: Alternator question

It's important to measure the voltage AT THE BATTERY. Do to a small amount of resistance in the wiring, measuring the voltage anywhere other than the battery terminals will show a slightly lower potential than what the charging system is actually putting out.

Re: Alternator question

FWIW mine runs 14.0-14.2 at startup and drops to 13.5-13.7 after the batts are recharged from using the glow plugs.
