annoying vibrations between 70-80 mph, need help??

I have a very annoying vibration coming from somewhere when the truck gets up to 70-80 mph and sometimes noticeable at lower speeds in town, etc. Most noticeably 70-80 mph. The seats shake like the truck is about to fall apart. I have had the tires road force balance tested, for faulty tires and/or wheels, no problems. Had the front end checked out and tires just balanced 200 miles ago and still have the same problems. The front end is completely tight, and nothing wrong with tires/wheels, i am stumped. Anyone else??

Re: annoying vibrations between 70-80 mph, need help??

Is there any way to borrow another (known-to-be-good) set of tires/wheels on for a test drive? That is the surest way to eliminate the tires, which I suspect are the source of your vibration.

Re: annoying vibrations between 70-80 mph, need help??

Have the rear u-joint checked. Mine went bad and that is how it felt. To be more specific, I noticed it more when on the throttle and less when coasting, and seemed worse at freeway speeds. Had it replaced with a greasable one, and the noise/vibration is completely gone. Good luck

Re: annoying vibrations between 70-80 mph, need help??

I just posted another closely related topic "rough ride." My 05 CC SRW longbed shakes harshly front to back when on any highway that is not perfectly smooth. It is almost impossible to hold a conversation with another person in the vehicle. My wife will not ride in the truck anymore. No mods done to the truck. I do have the camper package and 11500# GVWR package. I am taking it back to dealer this week to see if either of these packages may be causing the rough ride. I will let you know my results as soon as I find out more info. Please keep me posted as well.

Re: annoying vibrations between 70-80 mph, need help??

Front ball joints and U joint were all replaced under warranty at around 30k, now have 41k and problem is worse. It was vibrating before they replaced the ujoint but neve went away after the replaced it either. I thought somebody posted once on here that they had similar problems and replaced the shocks and that fixed the problem, but i'm not sure.

Mine has the "shakes" also at 70-80mph.. although sometimes it's more noticeable than other times.

Re: annoying vibrations between 70-80 mph, need help??

I had/have the same problem. It is annoying as hell. The whole truck shakes. The dealer first insisted it was tires, this has happened on two sets of tires and each set has been balanced several times. I convinced them it was not tires so they changed the driveshaft out. It helped but it still shakes some. I need to take it back in. Of course when I called they insisted it was the tires again. They said this was not a common condition. Yeah right! Look at this post. I think this site should be mandatory reading for all Ford service writers out there.

Re: annoying vibrations between 70-80 mph, need help??

I've got the same issue..I assume it's the tires. I dont get up to 75 too often so I haven't let it become much of an issue..but on the hwy it'd be nice to be able to "cruize" at 80 sometimes..

Maybe I'd better go get tires checked/balanced sometime..

I was suprised to see this discussion right after a long road trip (where this issue was becoming apparent often) though..

Re: annoying vibrations between 70-80 mph, need help??

i bought my 04 used with 40k on the clock, and it had the shakes at 42-45 mph. at 65k, i replacced all 4 tires, assuming it was the tires, and even though the old tires still had decent rubber. while they were putting the new tires on, they showed me how the rims had some vertical runout. not side to side, but up and down. stock wheels.
new tires on it, and it still shakes. so i stopped by a rim shop today that"fixes bent wheels" and they said that is a defect in the rims(3 out of 4) and that they could get stock rims for about 100 or so apiece. im gonna get 2 new rims and see what they do for me
just one more factor to think about

Re: annoying vibrations between 70-80 mph, need help??

I feel your pain. Same problem. Went to dealer and was told it was the tires. I thought I might have one separating. FINALLY got to where I couldn't even talk on my cell phone. So one day I turned down the mirrors so I could see the rear tires and I noticed how smoothly they were running BUT, I also noticed how much the truck body was vibrating in rapid up and down motion. I am NOT talking about a normal up and down motion representing stiff suspension. I watched other vehicles passing me and they were NOT doing it at all, so I ruled out the "rough road" theory. The only thing left had to be bad shocks. I bit the bullit and replaced them all with Rancho 9000's and set them on the "hardest" setting knowing I would then be able to immediately tell if I had just blown $400 bucks. It was like driving a totally different truck. My '05 has 28,000 miles on it. The FAKE Rancho's (stamped Motorcraft) were shot at around 12,000 miles. When I got home, my son and I played with the ones which came off the truck. In/out with almost no effort, but worse had "dead" spots in them with zero resistance. I guess the dead spots cause the violent vibrations. A simple test is to take off one of the shocks and manually try it. You may be SHOCKED Now figure you have a 7000 lb (?) truck bouncing around on these things. Good luck. BTW, no vibrations up to 95mph. I am sure there are other variables, but this was what solved my problem.

Re: annoying vibrations between 70-80 mph, need help??

I had mine into the dealership once while it was under warranty complaining about the vibrations (that is when they swapped out the ujoint) and said it was fixed. Well it wasn't but i never got it back in before the warranty ran out. I had a leveling kit installed at around 8k and they put new shocks on while doing so, but i have no idea if they are any good or not. I don't see a brand name on them, so i think i will take them off and put the stock ones back on for a test and see if that solves it. If so then i will take the plunge i guess and buy some good ones. Thanks everyone for the input, maybe we will get this problem figured out yet.

Before you spend the $$, have one pulled. It was easy to tell that mine were "dead". Let us know how you come out! Good luck.

Re: annoying vibrations between 70-80 mph, need help??

Same experience here... dealer insisted it was the tires. Replaced the tires ans still have same vibration at exactly 72-75 mph. This is driving me crazy!
