ANy news about the 6.4 being mated to a 6-speed auto?

I think the title says it all. Anyone heard anything about a 6-speed auto?

Re: ANy news about the 6.4 being mated to a 6-speed auto?

I too would like to know this. Most of the rumor mill has been directed at the motor, and none to the tranny. Honestly I can't imagine that the 2007 Ford trucks won't have a 6spd auto. The Chevy/GMC is already putting a 6spd Allison in the 2006 trucks. Dodge is rumored (by some very good sources) to be in the test phase with a 6spd auto for the 2007 trucks. I'm quite sure that Ford has to be doing something with the Torqueshift.

Well technically, the Torqshift is a six speed

Re: ANy news about the 6.4 being mated to a 6-speed auto?

i thought the trans was a six speed to. something about two of the gears being so close in ratio that it usually doesnt use one of them.

Re: ANy news about the 6.4 being mated to a 6-speed auto?

Correct.... there are six available ratios but the PCM/TCM decide which 5 to use in any shift progression. This is also a very "smart" transmission.. it wont even try a gear selection if it has previously seen a concern with that gear (slipping, pressure... that sort of thing).

AFAIK, there have been 6.4s in the wild since early this year but Ford is pretty tight lipped about what they are finding. Even the "certified gold" statements can be more conjecture than fact.

Re: ANy news about the 6.4 being mated to a 6-speed auto?

Yes, the transmission is so smart the driver can not access the direct drive gear ratio (1:1) directly like he could with his old E4OD transmission. Oh well, the price you pay for progress. That's my only grip with all these new 5 speed autos. The wife's Pilot is the same way.

No kidding!

BTW, am I the only guy who thinks more gears in an automatic transmission isn't necessarily a good thing? My father has an '01 D-max and that Allison 5-spd is constantly hunting for the right gear.

My 4R100 simply stays put most of the time unless there's some serious bogging or revving going on. AFAIK, automatics are supposed to act that way.

Re: ANy news about the 6.4 being mated to a 6-speed auto?

The reason I'm asking this is b/c GM has a 360HP/650FT-LB Duramax backed up with a 6-speed Allison. The 6-speed Allsion has been on the street for months now, and the LBZ Duramax will hit the dealers in a few weeks. I would like to see Ford do something for 06.

Re: ANy news about the 6.4 being mated to a 6-speed auto?

The HP marketings wars are getting interesting now. The funny thing is Cummins can and will win the HP / TQ contest hands down when there ready. The new Dmax is a much better design no doubt, but the straight 6 little monster is a wicked little sheep just waiting.....

Sure wish Ford would have excepted Allisons offer early on for the 6 speed auto. It does absorb a little more power due to its planetary gear setups but IMHO its a very small price to pay for what you get.
Not sure why Allison doesn't make a 6 speed available for the PSD's because many have seen it and it has existed since 03. Maybe contract restrictions or something?

Re: ANy news about the 6.4 being mated to a 6-speed auto?

You think that Ford would even give second thought to buying transmissions from GM?

And please don't bring up the 650/750

Re: ANy news about the 6.4 being mated to a 6-speed auto?

Heavy truck service director told me that the 6.4 will drop in to my x and mate up to tranny...designed to do so.

Re: ANy news about the 6.4 being mated to a 6-speed auto?

You might want to consider a tranny tune to improve things.

I agree with you. I can't ever step on the accelerator without the tranny downshifting a time or two as it is. A six speed would never stay in gear. That's one thing I really like about the Dodge auto. Once in gear, it generally stays there (i.e. doesn't downshift). With enough torque, you don't need more than four gears anyway!
