Bad Alternator or Battery ??

When I start my 04' 6.0 F-250 it starts fine, runs for 15 seconds and then the battery indicator light in the dash comes on. It stay on for 15 seconds then goes out and stays out until the next morning and does the same routing all over again. Do I have a battery going our or an alternator or ?? Are there two alternators on this model truck ?

Thanks,

amxgilligan

Hard to say. Best thing to do would be take the batteries and get them tested. Any parts store can do it.

Get the alternator tested while you're at it. Parts stores can do it, but I'd find an alternator shop if you can.

A dual alternator option was available but not very common.

Had the same issue with mine......from what I learned, it's almost always the alternator. I went with a DC Power 185 amp.

I had both batteries tested and they checked out fine. My truck does have dual alternators on it. I assume it is an intermittent problem as the battery light goes out after it runs for 30 seconds.

The truck will not charge when first started, when the glow plugs are on the computer will not let the alternator charge. Get a multimeter put it on one of the batteries and check voltage. I have a feeling the batteries are marginal, even if they check out.

Check the batterie voltage in morning before start, when while the charge light is on and when running for a while. That will help with diagnosing the problem.

That's how my FICM went bad. The alternators that come with this truck are the same ones that Ford puts on the Focus... ridiculously underpowered. My FICM went bad and I thought the injectors were next. i lost two out of four power supplies on the board. I got it repaired and upgraded to an Atlas 40 (PHP) programming from FICMrepairdotcom. I also upgraded to a DC power 220 amp alternator. The difference was huge. the Atlas 40 really beefed up my low end power. Without the alternator, you will go through a lot of batts, and ruin your FICM (which is a weak point anyway).

I'm fairly certain I see two alternators. How do I know which one is bad since it is intermittent ?

It's a performance tune for your FICM. Improves throttle response, gives you a few more HP and some folks see a slight improvement in fuel mileage. I don't have it (yet), but a lot of folks get it when they have their FICM rebuilt by FICMRepair.com. Since you have to send the FICM in to PHP or wait on a loaner programmer to do-it-yourself, it's a great time to do it if you're sending it in.

This happened to somebody else and he figured out the top alt was bad and the light went off once the bottom kicked on. I would pull both alts and have each one tested, i bet one is bad.

When i replace my alt i want with a high amp model off ebay. There is a company in calif that custom builds each order and he uses off the shelf parts. So it is a brand new large case alt. Dropped in w/o modifications and it is so nice to see a steady 14.4v charging and 13.6v not charging. I did also up-size all of my alt to battery and battery to battery wiring up to 0-ga wire.

Even better get the PHP FICM tuner and have 4 choices of programming. I have the Atlas 40 running my FICM with NO complaints.
