Bad mileage on '05 6.0

Hello to y'all. I am a new poster. I had Ford replace my turbo and clean the EGR about 2000 miles ago on my '05 F450 4x4 flatbed w/33000 miles on it. The mileage went from 10.3 down to 7.1 on a 1500 mile trip. I put power service in the fuel when I bought it last fall in bulk. Anyone have an idea what caused the drop in mileage? Also, does anyone know of a programmer or module that will give me better mileage and not leave a footprint that might void the warranty? Thanks in advance. The logger.

That is beyond bad. If you are not still under warranty, I'd start with the fuel filter and get a program diagnostic all over the fuel system. I've heard of bad turbos, clogged cats or bent exhaust pipes doing that too. Sure you don't have a leak?

I know you are working on it, but I would find the problem before adding the tuner. With that low of fuel economy, there is something wrong. Are you sure they hooked everything back up after the turbo and EGR work?

You could always try the PCM re-learn ....
PCM Relearn Stragey:
To do this drive the truck for 15 minutes and get it to operating temp. Then turn the truck off and disconnect both batteries for at least 20 seconds. Then reconnect the batteries. Now cycle the glow plugs on then off twice. Now start the truck. Do not move the truck now, Let it idle for at least 7 minutes. During this time you will hear the exhaust note change, this is the truck learning a strategy. Make sure the truck is hot, if it isn't it will not work right. Then drive it - vary the driving conditions for 30 minutes.

Bad mileage on '05 6.0

Thanks to you guys who responded to my mileage problem. I will check for leaks, change the fuel filters, and try that PCM relearn. This truck is still under warranty, but I don't trust the dealer I had the work done at. Both dealers that have worked on this truck in the past have done poor work. I don't know where else to go. There are a couple of heavy equipment mechanics that work on my logging stuff, but I wouldn't think they know much about the 6.0. Anyway, whats the point of a warranty if you cant use it? I have been so frustrated with this truck that I think this will be my last Ford. I have two other Ford diesels(7.3s) that need replacing and they wont be Fords. I will google that loony tune programmer and see what thats all about. Thanks again, and if anyone else has any suggestions, please let me know.

Go to any IH shop. They do the best PSD warranty work. Forget Ford stealers. Keeping the 7.3s running will always be cheaper than replacing them.

Bad mileage on '05 6.0

Thanks '06 clone for telling me about the I.H. dealers. There are 3-I.H. shops near my Oregon location. I have even owned a couple of them(trucks) over the years. And yeah, I'll probably keep the 7.3 crewcabs for awhile. They take alot of abuse on these logging roads up here. The front ends have been rebuilt 3 or 4 times, along with rotors and axle seals. I'll check the shops out next week. Thanks again.

Here is some more info on poor fuel economy:

6.0/6.4 Fuel Economy:
Ford vehicles equipped with the 6.0 PowerStroke diesel are not rated for fuel economy by the EPA. If economy is in question, a boost test should be performed. If boost reaches 22-25 PSI in third gear, wide open throttle under load, then the engine is operating normally and no economy related repairs need to be performed. If not in specs, then the engine will need to be diagnosed--check sensor reading, VGT and EGR operation, fuel pressure and quality, crankcase pressure, intake or exhaust restriction, exhaust or CAC leaks.
Fuel economy will be affected by many factors, including: excessive idle time (one hour equals approximately 33 miles of driving), fuel quality and blend, ambient temperature, driving habits, vehicle use, towing, loads, add-on accessories. Broadcast Message 1271, 4450, 6989

Good info. Ignore dealers. Always go to industrial repair shops. Everyone else will rip you off and try to sell you something new. Filter and burn your waste motor oil. All of it. Veg oil too. The government lies to us.
