Best Cetane Boosters

I'm trying hard to find a good cetane booster to fix some problems with the 2 international trucks I drive(both have the 6.0l, one is a 2003 the other 2005) the local ford dealer has no idea what I'm talking about niether do the local parts stores, but I lucked out and found a bottle of Diesel Kleen at a truckstop, how well will it work?

Are there any better ones out there? maybe cheaper too since it sounds like I will have to use it every fill up?

Welcome to the site dieseltruckman. There is the Ford Motorcraft Cetane Booster as well as Dieselkleen and Stanadyne and probably other products out there that claim the same. Your Ford parts department manager ought to know about the Motorcraft Cetane booster. If not, time to find a new dealer.

Some people swear by them others don't. Personally, I add 2stroke oil (TC-3W) to my fuel to lube the injectors and swear by it. Others here think it harms my engine but I firmly believe it runs better so do a lot of other guys who do the same. It's all subjective to one's own opinion.

Perhaps you may want to share the problems you're having with the engines in the forum because they might not be related to the cetane level in your fuel.

Just sayin.

I think the problems are being caused by the egr system pluging up, I was hoping that the higher cetane would burn cleaner and prevent the egr from pluging.

Yes as Band Member said others will work, i use the Ford cetane boost buy it by the case but will be getting it in the gallon cans next time 2 gallon cost less money than by the case and drive it like you stole it to keep the turbo and egr valve clean and working. Boy that takes the cake when Ford can't find it, it's there product.

As long as the EGR system is there, you have the potential for plugging the valve. Cetane boost won't cure the problem but it should prolong it.

The very principle that EGR's operate on cause soot (more so than w/out an EGR) to be produced in the combustion process. This is circulated right back to the valve and plugs it up. Kinda ironic ain't it? Install a device to lower emissions that increases other emissions that ultimately kill the device. That's why the post 6.0L engines have EGR's and particulate filters (for soot).

I think we use 10W40, I'm going to cut any idle time that I can.

How hard is it to clean the egr system? one of the trucks is really bad, I had it out today for a short drive and I couldn't get it over 70 km/h.

I'd like to do an egr delete, but because these trucks are comercial vehicles they need an emission test every year. How bad would the test results be if I did?

Here is the how to on the EGR
Diesel Technician Society
Diesel Technician Society
One of the guys here in town works only on the 6.0 and that is the only parts house that he uses, but it also comes down to coolant for the long haul if you want to spend the $$$$ on coolant and flushes every 25-30k then the Ford junk will work or do it 1 time and go 300k with ELC coolant.

The Diesel Kleen and Diesel Cetane Booster, do they do the same thing or can they be used at the same time?

I have been using this one AMSOIL Fuel Additives and Performance Improver there all good.

Cetane makes diesel fuel burn faster for easier starts and they all lubricate The injectors
