Best oil for a 6.0L engine?

I was running Rotella T 15-40 in my old 7.3L diesel. I have quiet a stock pile (bought 75 gallons at a close-out price last year for the 7.3 I had, truck totaled out by a drunk driver - now forced to buy into a new truck) One very credible diesel mechanic sais there are better oils out there for this 6.0L engine and that the right oil will make a huge difference in the longevity of the truck and reduce problems as the truck ages. Since I now own a 2004 6.0L........what oil is best for these motors?

Re: Best oil for a 6.0L engine?

I've had great luck with Rotella in my 2004 6.0L - it's all I've run since I had the truck. 76,000 miles now, all except for the dealer fill with Motorcraft.

Re: Best oil for a 6.0L engine?

Congrats on the 04 and that's too bad about your old truck. I hope nobody was hurt or killed by that idiot's decision to D&D. Let me start by saying opinions are like... well, everybody has one. The 6.0 is tough on oil but I think the Rotella is fine as long as it's rated properly. Look in your manual to see whether you need CH-4, CI-4, etc. Some people have reported finicky 6.0s that run better on 10W-30. In Michigan, you might consider this in the winter. If the Rotella is properly rated then run it and get an oil analysis done at 5k and see how it goes. You might get an oil analysis done anyway to see what's going on in your new-to-you truck.

Re: Best oil for a 6.0L engine?

My manual recommends CI-4. CH-4 is also acceptable. The oil I have tons of is: meets API service CI-4, CH-4, CG-4, CF-4, CF/SJ, SL Now that is all greek to me, but I believe it will work

Re: Best oil for a 6.0L engine?

You need an oil that also has hydraulic properties to account for the high pressure systems used by the 6.0. Motorcraft and International's oil meet this requirement because they build the truck/engines that need it.

Think of a floor jack. If you put motor oil in it, it won't work. Same issue with the 6.0L (and 7.3L to a lesser degree). Without hydraulic properties, the oil does not work as well with the high pressure systems.

Re: Best oil for a 6.0L engine?

You make a very good point, but I don't see anything in the manual referencing the hydraulic properties.

Re: Best oil for a 6.0L engine?

There are probably better oils for the 6.0 but Rotella T is perfectly fine so long as you change it regularly. Main thing is to detemine how long it'll hold viscosity without shearing down, then set your OCI accordingly. Get an oil analysis or three, or look around for some oil analysis threads on this site that'll give you that info.

Re: Best oil for a 6.0L engine?

Now that's a crock of crap!
On edit, I would say that any fluid has "hydraulic" properties. A floor jack will work with water or motor oil. Hydraulic oil is simply oil with a little different viscosity and a different additive package. NO detergents or dispersants.
Maybe an anti-corrosive additive and an anti-foam.

Re: Best oil for a 6.0L engine?

Over the years, we have had MANY oil threads, and the general consensus of opinion is that the 6.0 is a picky engine, and one will like Rotella, the next one maybe likes Delo better, but they are both great oils.
