Black Smoke

I haven't been driving the F-250 much lately. I got it out of the garage Sunday to haul some ladders. I drove it about 2 miles, outside temps were around 40 deg. F. Ran fine until I was sitting at a traffic light, and suddenly it started idling real rough, and HUGE clouds of smoke. I stuck it in neutral, and revved it up to around 1500 - 1800 rpm, it continued to smoke for about 30 40 secs. I let off off the gas, and put it back in drive, the light changed, and I drove off as if nothing had ever ever happened, except for some residual smoke.

Any guesses as to what happened here?

I'm guessing a stuck EGR valve, but this is all new to me. BTW, the Van Aaken was turned off the whole time.

Re: Black Smoke

Well, assuming it's a typo & we're talking the F-250,

How much is "not much lately"? About the worst thing you can do for a 6.0 is NOT run it. The turbo seems to be a bit finicky about this, and if not excercised on a REGULAR basis, likes to rust a bit & start sticking. Then you get a cloud of black smoke (partially combusted fuel) out the end & a loss of performance.

Get it out & up to operating temp at least every 10 days. Run it for an hour or so to let the engine warm up and mix fluids around.

Re: Black Smoke

Sorry. The 150 was a typo. D'oh! I'll take her out on the freeway more often, and run the cobwebs out.
