Black smoke and hesitation, HELP!

My wife's '04 PSD has started hesitating when accelerating and blows heavy black smoke. I drove it this past weekend on a 450 mile round trip. When you get on the pedal to pass someone, it spits an sputters, then finally goes on it's way leaving a thick black cloud of smoke behind. I noticed it blowing a lot of black smoke everytime we were heading up an overpass also. It has been doing this for about 2 weeks. Air filter is fairly clean, new WIX fuel filters, several tanks of diesel from different locations and brands.

Any ideas?

Re: Black smoke and hesitation, HELP!

EGR valve and EBP (exhaust back pressure sensor) are the usual suspects for a 2004 for these symtoms. There are tech bulletins out on some of this so if you are lucky the fix may be free. Check with your dealer.

Re: Black smoke and hesitation, HELP!

Got it in to the dealer today and sure enough ... bad EGR valve 4C3Z 9F452 A. Runs fine now ... no smoke.

Thanks for the replies.
