Funny how that works isn't it? We recently bought a 74' beetle for my wife and it sits in the garage. Still haven't figured that one out!

To the original poster- If your truck is '05 or later you better make sure you HAVE a block heater, as this item ceased to be present on newer trucks unless it was ordered. I have also heard that trucks came with a heater and no chord. This would be more likely if the truck was purchased in FL. As for your temp question- I try to get mine plugged in under 30. Sure, your truck will probably start at zero without plugging it in, but I have often times likened the first five minutes of engine operation to kicking your best friend in the face. The racket can't be good for the engine.

I believe they all come with the heater but not the cord. Mine didn't have the cord, but the dealer added it at my request. Personally, I plug my truck in when the temps are below 40. You see, my wife drives the truck daily and she doesn't know what it means to take it easy until it warms up. I've heard her nail it getting out of the driveway. So the cost of the electricity is worth it to me. Oh by the way, I tried once to talk to the wife about her driving habits...that was a mistake.

I wasn't really sure about block heaters, chords, and exactly what trucks were delivered without. I just got the info from this site in '04, and when I ordered my '05, I made sure the truck came complete with heater and chord.
As for your spouse's driving habits- I cured that with a stick shift. She won't drive it.

You're a better man than me. I mentioned something about getting a stick shift but she told me my opinion didn't count (j/k of course...I think ) .

That engine is a BIG hunk of metal. If you expose a warm engine to -40 temps, I'm pretty sure it will cool off alot faster than a block heater can bring it back up to temp. If your truck runs rough for 5 min. after you start it, you might want to consider plugging it in for a lopnger period of time. I plug mine in all night here in the "mild" temps of OH, and it starts easy, and warms up quick. I am cinsidering a timer, since our temps aren't as bad as yours, but if they were, I'd plug it in all night. JMHO

Regardless of when and what temp you plug the truck in, take a minute or two and make sure that the plug is in good shape (see pics of my '01). The loose plug takes a beating if you don't secure it and bad things happen when you don't inspect it. ahem...
Also, use a heavy gauge extension cord and make sure your outlet is in good shape and the timer is properly rated. It's worth it, believe me!
I'm using a timer that cuts the heater on at 4am, and I leave for work about 7:30. I'll plug it in anytime it's going to be below 35*F. I think that keeping the truck in good shape is worth the slightly higher electric bill.
I was told taking off right away is ok if you keep the RPM's under 2k
Take care

Again, I think that geographical location really comes in to play here. When temps here get ridiculous (like they are sure to) I'll try to get some video of the truck starting up. I can guarantee if you've ever heard this truck start in -40 you would not be inclined to hop in and take off!
When temps get that low, 4 hours of block heater is still enough to allow for smoother startup. From there it takes about 10 minutes at high idle before I'm comfortable pulling out.

Went out this morning and it was 17F. My jacket was still hanging in the back seat, and I'm comfy in a golf shirt. Once it gets cold out I'll put a coat on and plug the trucks in at about 5F. At least there's no mosquitos. Cold is relevant to your own location, temperature isn't.
