Buying a "new to me" truck, fuel mileage questions?
Hey everyone. I am new here but I have been cruising the forum and checking some things out. I am looking at buying an 06 F-250 Crew Cab Lariat 4x4 with the FX4 package. It has 70k miles on it and it is extremely clean and well taken care of. It doesn't have any mods on it and it has never towed anything at all. It does have a 6" Fabtech lift on it with 20" Weld wheels and 35" Nitto Terra Grapplers.
I really want to know what type of fuel mileage the guys with the 6.0L engines and lifts on their trucks are getting. When I test drove the truck the liar on the dash was saying about 13.4 mpg or something like that. I just want to know what I am getting into if I buy this truck. I also tow about 10 to 12k pounds on a regular basis. What type of mpg are you guys getting while towing. Thanks for any replies!

With the lift, you're going to see mileage in the 14 area at 70. If you get rid of the lift and tires, you should be in the mid 17 range. Traffic will see about 12 13. A lift sure looks good, but letting any air under the truck will suck economy down the drain.
With my truck, I see 17.8 regularly at 70 unloaded, and 14 towing if I keep it at 60. At 70, that goes down to 11.

Thanks. That is what I thought. I wouldn't be too disappointed with 14mpg. I am mainly going to use this truck to tow my 23 foot boat and to go back and forth to work (15 - 20mins). The last SUV that I had got 19mpg doing the same things but I could not tow my boat with it.
Would it be a good idea to replace the exhaust with a larger aftermarket one or should I just keep everything stock?
I get pretty bad mileage...around 11 - 12. But I need to clarify that I don't get too many highway miles. Lots of traffic lights here. When I do stretch her legs the meter reads 17ish, but doesn't stay there long. Any hills or stoplights drop that something horrible.
I don't expect much in the way of mileage here, nature of our 'short road' beast, but I'm still better than the V10's in town (8 ish).
Now I just have to keep fingers crossed that my 6.0L lasts.

Doing the exhaust won't do much for your mileage. Its to help lower EGT's when towing heavy & up steep grades. Nothing wrong with a cat back exhaust with gauges, but it won't do much for the economy.
If economy is truly a concern, the best mods are cosmetic - lower the truck, put smaller tires on it, keep them aired properly, put an air dam on the front, and a cranked tapered cap on the back. Those alone should gain you into the low 20's, if you can keep your foot out of it.

I'm currently getting a real world 13mpg in mine with a 4 inch lift and 325's on it with an almost 50/50 mixture of in town and highway. The comp says 11.5, but it's usually really around 13mpg. Not great, but it is what it is.
