Cam Position Sensor Bad?

I have an 04 with 100K on it. Truck has run great and pulls strong. Recently I've had problems with the engine surging. The RPMs will go high at idle then drop off almost to nothing. At highway speeds I'll get either a surge or drop in RPMs almost like my foot slipped off the pedal or I hit a bump and stomped it down. Sometimes, particularly at low speed, the RPMs will drop and the engine will stall. It's always restarts wtihout any problem. The dealer just put in a new ICP sensor with new connector and that did not fix the problem. I don't want to keep throwing darts at this because it's awfully costly. From reading here, I think I have a bad cam position sensor. Any other thoughts? Thanks.

Really need to scan it before you throw done the $$ on a new CMP. find someone with a scanner or go to autozone and have it scanned. Good luck..

Good advice and done. I had a P0603 code which I think is from my Super Chip tuner. Cleared the code and that has not returned. But I still have the problem with intermitent high or low RPM and periodic stalling. While I complain about the dealship throwing darts at the problem, I'm doing the same thing. My only clue is this is similar to what my 7.3 L did when the cam position sensor was failing.

Mine is in the shop right now and the tech thinks it is a bad cam position sensor. When he disconnected it, oil drained out of the electrical connection and the interior was coated in engine oil. My truck would run great, then stall and die. It would re-start again... until Saturday! It would idle and then just die. The tech thinks the CPS was shorted out internally due to 1, or both, o-ring failures along the sensor, allowing engine oil to interrupt the signal. The part arrives tomorrow... well see!

Exactly my symptoms except it has not let me sit. When it stalls, it always starts right back. Good luck with your truck.

Did you guys have any CPS specific codes? My truck is randomly stalling (typically off throttle, going downhill or slowing down). The stalling occurs maybe once a week. The idle occasionally fluctuates up and down also, I do not notice this while driving only at idle. I have been thinking it was the harness since I am not getting any codes.

Sorry for not responding sooner, but NO, I had no codes at all. According to the scanner, everything is just fine. And so you know, though changing the CPS did not turn out to be all that hard, it did not change anything. As our weather here in Colorado gets colder, it seems to me I have no problems if the outside air temp is below 40. If it's above 40, then I start to have the idling and surging problems. Like you, particularly when off the throttle like at a stop light, going down hill, pulling into a parking lot, etc. Hope this helps. Good luck.
