can ficm be tested outside vehicle?

If I could remove the ficm could i take it and get it tested to see if it is any good? also can a code reader be rented or come to a place where the truck is sitting? cannot afford to have a shop fix it so i need to know where to start and how to go about it.

Question

Got same question. Ours died like turned off the key. Looked at everything we can think of outside of changing electical componants. The dealer told me that you have to flash the FICM to match the truck so you can't try one from a diff truck.

Actually you can swap FICM's from truck to truck. The 03 and early 04 FICM's that have not been flashed make the 05-07 runs alot better. Or you can have the FICM you have flashed by the aftermarket vendors to custom tunes. They may be able to test it aswell.

Someone should do a poll to see how many FICM failures there are and if it did fail.... did it have the heat inductive flash. The ford dealer I work with has see a rash a bad FICMs and they all had the heat inductive flash...

Diesel tech here told me that their rash of FICM's going bad all had the flash and barely had any bad ones before. Mine just went out.
