Changed XMSN external filter today

OK as you know I did the fuel filters a few days ago and all went well. So today I thought I'd do the XMSN filter. I had the tranny flushed at the dealer at 15,000 miles just because . Well I thought I'll do the filter to take me through the interum (I'm at 30,000mi now) until I flush again at 45,000mi. I used a #58904 WIX from Filter1 for $9.08. I used a 7/8 socket (dont know metric size but 7/8 works perfect), changed O-ring, wiped off the magnet/base (which was very clean) and inside the housing, popped in the new filter and tightened. I also pumped the 4 steering zirks with grease. Filter service on this truck is fun and gives me a nice warm fuzzy feeling.
Has any of you guys done a pan only drain and refill just to freshen up the fluid?

Re: Changed XMSN external filter today

I do a drain and filter change according to Ford's maintenance schedule. What I do is drain the pan, remove it, clean the magnet, check the pan for anything that is not supppose to be there, reinstall the pan, change the inline filter and refill. Drive the truck for at least 20 miles, drain the pan again and refill. I know I am not getting all the old fluid out by not flushing. I am not worried about that. Transmission fluid does not get contaminated by byproducts of combustion or fuel saturation. Every other oil change I also change the in-line transmission filter. Thanks to the low cost of the filter from Filter1, I consider it cheap insurance. I also get the MerconSP from my dealer for a pretty fair price considering it is a synthetic fluid.
Also for those considering it. First transmission service I bought the filter that is inside the transmission pan, thought what the hell, since I am going to drop the pan anyways. This filter is nothing more than a screened pickup tube. In other words go by what Ford tells you, save the $20 I paid for the screen and leave it in. If you do decide to remove and replace it, ensure that the pink colored o-ring type seal comes down with the filter and does not get stuck up inside the port like mine did. Had to remove it with a scribe,

Re: Changed XMSN external filter today

How many quarts to refill when you just drain the pan? I may do that in addition to the filter.

7&1/2 to 8 quarts. I bought twenty quarts at the dealer. Drain, refill, drive, drain, refill. Couple of spare quarts in the bed tool box.

Re: Changed XMSN external filter today

Ok - I feel dumb.

There's an external tranny filter? Screw on (oil filter like)?

Where's this thing located?

Can you really change the tranny fluid like the oil now? I noticed the other day while under the truck for the oil it stated that the tranny pan gasket is reusable.

Is this in the manual?

TIA!
