Changing fuel filters, HFCM never quit draining

I changed my fuel filters this morning and when I did the frame mounted filter it wouldn't shut the fuel off. Usually you drain the housing and it stops, this time I had a steady stream the entire time. Made a hell of a mess. I drained it into the same pan as my waste oil so its hard to tell, but I'd guess I drained close to a gallon of fuel before I was done.

Anyone had this happen before? Is this a sign of future problems? Anything I can fix?

One of my two 06's did that once and I chalked it up to full fuel tank and a warm day. The HFCM is lower than tank and there is really no good reason I can think that wouldn't siphon out of HFCM every time you do a filter change but it doesn't. Regardless, I have had no issues and fuel pressure on that truck is good under load on the occasions I have checked it.

M..know what your mean & yes it's kinda wierd. Over yrs. I recall couple time's while draining didnt think it would stop so I put plug back in. Usually 2 or 3 cups drains, then stops. I would imagine any water would flush out rather fast, certainly before loosing a gal. fuel. JMO!

Way I park front end is slightly down. I use 5 gal. bucket to catch fuel & upgraded plug works good. You can experiment, cap off & less fuel in tank. I'll find out soon when draining if it's gonna be normal/wierd?

Three things you can do to prevent this. Change filters when tank is at 1/4 level or less, park on an incline with the front of truck on the high side and remove the fuel filler cap in case you have press. built up in the tank.

Well at least I'm not the only one. I did have about 3/4 of a tank, and I can't remember if I've ever changed it with the tank that full before or not but it seems like that could be the cause. I'll keep that in mind for the next time around.

After I changed oil I drained the hfcm. Front end slightly down, gas cap ON (not off) & fuel just under 1/2 tank. About 2 cups drained out (no water) & stopped. Cycled key on/off 3 times & fired up. Just another reason they call 6L's, snowflakes.
