Been trying to use the search but haven't really found all my answers so I thought I would ask you guys and get it figured out!
Got an 04 6.0 4x4 auto srw cc f350 with about 85,000 on it. Had the tranny fluid flushed by Ford around 30k but it's time for us to change it out. Should have been done before now but it didn't and I'm ready to do it now.
First off, is there a write-up on the method of doing it? Found one for the 7.3 I think but nothing for the 6.0
I don't want to flush it, just change the fluids and filters so from what it looks like, it takes around 8 quarts. I went ahead and picked up a case of Mercon SP from kmansparts so I should be set on fluid. Already had the external filter but also picked up a Motorcraft internal filter when I bought the fluid.
I think the transmission pan has a reusable gasket but was sure so I thought I would ask since the filter did not come with one. Is there a torque to tighten the bolts back up to or just tighten them tight?
Since the external filter housing has never been off, it seems like I read that short bursts with an air gun and the correct socket are the best method for removing the housing?
When changing the tranny filter inside, do you just pull the old one down and stick the other one into place? I haven't changed many but it seems like there was a plastic ring or gromment type piece you had to pop out but the new filter didn't have any extras. Just seems like the filter just goes in and that's it.
While I'm under there, I guess I should change the transfer case fluid also. I think it takes 4 quarts but what kind of fluid do I run in it? I know I could put the SP in there but didn't know if there was another fluid to run in it and save the SP for another day?
Sorry for all the questions but just want to make sure I do this right.
Thanks,
Charlie
