coolant

All,

I have been using ZEREX G05 coolant in my 6.0L & my 4.0L Jeep.
BUT
The hardware store chain that supplied it dropped it from thier line.

I went to NAPA online, told them I had a 6.0L powerstroke
AND
they recommend PRESTONE EXTENDED LIFE part number PAF AF2000.
NAPA claims it it a direct replacement for GO5.

Anyone using PRESTONE ?
ANY TROUBLES ?
Would PRESTONE require an additive pkg for diesel like VC8 ?

I am preping for my first cooling system flush & fill.

Mack..does prestone coolant meet fmc WSS M97B51 A1 ASTM D3306. If not, find zerex GO5 or get gold at . Recently talked about, so just go thru few back pages. Good luck.

When I'm out of warranty, I'm going to flush and refill with the red ELC that Navistar uses in the VT365. All reports are that it's a MUCH better coolant, and that the only reason Ford used the G05 is that it's fleet compatible.

Take Care

They are giving you incorrect info but NAPA should have Zerex G-05 coolant.

That Prestone stuff will work if you add some DCA-4 or DCA-2 to it. G-05 already has DCA-2 in it.

Same here. I've been running it for about a year now.

what makes the red ELC better ?

longer change interval ?
more efficient heat exchange ?
anti corrosive properties better ?

I am also interested in the specific properties that cause people to say it is better. I know one of them that people quote is 150k miles between changes/flushes. I am leary about that being achievable without some downsides to protection in the "real world" application.

In our application, the change interval is 300K or 600K with a specific "booster" at 300K (provided you use distilled water of course) in OTR use, 600K is the change interval and stretched even further with the "booster".

The boiling point is higher. I can't remember off the top of my head what the difference is but I did compare them when I had bottles of each available to me.. For some reason, 12 degrees sticks in my mind but I will not swear that is correct.

Anti-corrosion I can't really speak about because I do not know. But I feel very certain it is at least as good (after all, it is supposed to last 300K)...

Finally, it is also the factory fill in the VT365 (the IH version of our engine).. If it is good enough for IH, it is good enough for me...

Last Question

Thank Guys, that's some good info.

My Last Questions about G05 is this.

First Read what I found on the G05 website-->

_________________________________________
Valvoline’s Zerex G05 antifreeze coolant is a long life
Fully formulated ethylene glycol-based fluid suitable for
Passenger cars, light trucks and heavy duty vehicles.

The formulation is designed for both gasoline and diesel
engines. It’s lower silicate, reduced pH, phosphate free
European technology Protects all cooling system metals,
including aluminum, from corrosion.

ZEREX G05 IS A NITRITE CONTAINING COOLANT
DESIGNED TO PROTECT DIESEL ENGINE CYLINDER
LINERS FROM CAVITATION.

It contains deposit control additives for protection from hard water
Deposits and scale. The ASTM and other test data shown on this
Sheet reflect the high performance corrosion inhibitor package
_________________________________________

After reading the part I put in BOLD & underlined, I read that as to mean
no cooling systems additives are necessary for the 6.0L.

Am I correct ??

I agree and that is why I will stick with the GO-5 or Premium Gold.

updated coolant check says..if test strip indicates nitrite level is between 300-800ppm add 32oz of supplemental coolant additive m/c VC8. If below 300ppm flush system with iron cleaner VC9. Nothing if nitrite level over 800ppm.
