Design life of the fuel injectors and the fuel pump

What is the design life of the fuel injectors and the fuel pump? From what I have read on the Diesel Stop, if the pump looses pressure the fuel injectors will self-destruct. So if I knew the MTBF of the fuel pump, I could decide when it would be best to replace it so that I don’t get stuck somewhere and have to spend some serious $$$ to replace the fuel pump and all of the injectors as well.

Re: Design life of the fuel injectors and the fuel pump

Welcome to this forum.

Your question has a wide array of answers.....from no life to a long life. With manufactured defects set aside, the life expectancies will very with each user. Specifically, how you maintain your vehicle and how you drive.

Keep scheduled maintenances.....change fuel filters and oil/filter changes, drain the water separator, air filter, tire pressure...etc., will give you the longest possible life to your truck. Drive reasonably.

Oh, and when you wash, wax, shine the wheel, vacuum the insides they seem to run better!

Re: Design life of the fuel injectors and the fuel pump

Thanks for your response. I have changed fuel filters at 15k and today I dropped the transmission pan and replaced the internal filter as well as the bypass filter; the truck has 24k on it now. It took 9.3 quarts of fluid to fill it up. I’ve read where some needed 8.5 quarts to fill it back up but I contribute the extra fluid needed because I dropped the pan. The magnet in the pan around the drain hole would keep the remaining fluid from draining out, so I’m glad I dropped it. I believe in keeping the oil(s) changed and running good quality filters. This truck is the easiest vehicle I’ve serviced, but looking under the hood and crawling under it and looking up, changing hoses and belts will be an experience that I won’t forget. I’m just glad that I’m a few years away from needing to replace those items. I drive approximately 25k a year, mostly highway miles so I’m hopping I won’t experience the clogged up EGR/Turbo failures that I read about here. I did have an EGR valve replaced at 4k because of a check engine light but I believe there must have been a manufacturing defect in the valve to fail that quickly. The dealership I bought the truck from has a great Sales Department and a very knowledgeable Service Department. The last time I was in there I asked to buy 30 minutes of the diesel mechanics time, everyone has bills to pay so I didn’t want to bother him without him getting paid for the time, but they let me talk to him, no charge. I’m very pleased with the truck, love the power and fuel economy (gets the same miles per gallon as the Ranger that I traded for it). I hope to get many years of service from it.

Take care

Re: Design life of the fuel injectors and the fuel pump

Don't know about the design life, but the truck in my sig still has 2 original C-94 injectors and the original fuel pump. 95% of those miles are highway, 500-600 a day, and 65% of all miles are while towing. Yes, low/no fuel pressure will take injectors with it (voice of experience). As already stated, follow the maintenance schedule and you should have no problems.

Happy Truckin'

Re: Design life of the fuel injectors and the fuel pump

Weeellll,

I've taken it down to below empty on a regular basis for 58k miles. I've seen more than 720 miles to a tank, and I still have all 8 C-94 injectors.

I did have one OA that spiked fuel at 2.5%, but that seems to be an anomoly - most are under 1.5%. It doesn't use oil, doesn't make oil, will puff a bit of white smoke in the early, cold am, but it still seems to be running strong, no funny sounds, no romps / surges, no cut outs or coughs. Hasn't puked. The OA's have come back w/ normal wear & shear for 7.5k OCI's.

I have used good quality B-20 for quite a bit of those 58k. So - 3yrs & 58k+ so far.

I just take the compressor hose and blow out the truck if I think about it. Usually does the job, but if the truck don't impress em, my Harley RoadKing usually takes care of the "loose ends"!
