Did Ford improve 6.0 EGR parts??

Been a member for a while but 1st time post. I have an 05' that's recently been diagnosed with beginnings of the imfamous EGR system failure -exhaust gases in the degas bottle and coolant loss - could also have compromised head gaskets.

I've looked at the Bulletproof system and the Sinister EGR delete but I'm in California so the Sinister delete is out of the question since we have to suffer through smog checks now. I'm very leary about Ford egr parts back in the truck but two local shops and the Ford dealership (that don't install Bulletproof) have told me that Ford has redisigned (improved) the parts since the EGR fiasco -including better head bolts.

The cost to install the Ford system back in is 1/2 the cost of the Bulletproof system here locally. Anybody out there know for certain that Ford indeed improved the parts? I'd love to save a bundle money.

Thanks in advance.

Isaac,

I think the only ones that have did any improvements are the aftermarket people. Ford may have a little better oil cooler now but I would get the egr cooler from BPD along with ARP studs if you have to pull the heads get some gauges then do a coolant flush add ELC coolant then do your repairs or you may be doing it again.

About a month after a bought my truck I replaced my EGR cooler because the silicone hose had a slight leak, I never asked them if the cooler had been updated but they did update the silicone line. If yours is orange the new one will be blue. A year ago when it was in the shop for cylinder failure I got new heads and they told me ARP studs were unnecessary that the head bolts were going to be new and a better version. I had already ordered the ARP studs so I got them to install the new heads using those. Look at the cost factor. $600 for studs now could save you $6,000 on yet another set of head gaskets and labor later. (Cost are most likely higher than that in CA)

Here's something you might look in to.

05 Harley and 2 Stroker, thanks for taking the time to respond – Much appreciated.

Yeah, I still think I'm at an impasse on what to do, though I definitely don't want to visit this problem again - too much$$$.

What's making things a bit sketchier is that both repair shops are only giving 6 months/5k mile warranty for the install of the Ford system. As we all know the EGR problems can take as long as 75k to manifest (like my truck) so I'm starting to lean towards the BPD system.

If I end up with the Ford system I'll definitely do the flush and more than likely the coolant filter and the ARP studs.

Decisions, Decisions…….

If anything, Ford went backwards on the EGR cooler. The 2003's had a better EGR design that fail at a much lower rate than later models. But the '03 won't fit later models. BulletProof Diesel does make a very robust EGR cooler (a la the '03 design) for later models and people needing or wanting to keep it.

And Ford never changed the TTY head bolts. They're exactly the same as the day the first model rolled off the assembly line.
