Diesel Misfire?

While returning from Galveston, I was pulling my 5th wheel at about 60-65 MPH and the engine kept missing. It felt like the electrical was cut for a second each time. It was raining and cool temperature. I don't know much about diesels. I have a '04 6'0 CC FX4 completely stock ,5th wheel about 11K lbs. It also seemed like the trans did not want to stay in the same gear and would "slip". The engine light came on and stayed on. We made it back to New Braunfels, TX with a lack of power. I am using the low sulfur fuel with an additive. TIA

Re: Diesel Misfire?

Probabley had a Inj go out.More than likely A injector coil has shorted to ground. This will set the CEL light other Mechanical Inj problems wont. The trans was probley Hunting alot due to the dead cylinder and drop in power.

Re: Diesel Misfire?

If an injector coil is a concern, an injector electrical code will be set.... if there is a mechanical concern with either the injector or a cylinder, a contribution code will be set. It is rare for a 6.0 injector to have an electrical concern so we generally see contribution codes.

The PCM doesn't monitor the crankshaft trigger wheel for position and rotational speed, it also watches for tooth to tooth variations in crankshaft speed. In this manner, it can decide if a particular cylinder isn't "up to snuff".

Re: Diesel Misfire?

Just got the truck back from Ford. They said it was an EGR valve that was working erratically and they replaced it. There were no codes set, they told me. Thanks for the help. It great to know that someone is on the web to help. This is a great site.
