This does not look good

Guys,

This is the front passenger side of the axle. It looks like a seal has busted loose. How bad is this?

Just a dust seal. No biggie. The real seal is up at the pumpkin.

Could this be the reason that the truck has a shimmy when you turn the wheel and take off? I notice it more when I am on an incline and stopped. When I start to take off to turn onto the road there is a vibration. It almost feels like to truck is in 4 wheel drive. Once you get moving or straighten the wheel it goes away. What can cause this? I have moved the hub locks from auto to lock and it still does it. I run the truck in 4 wheel drive at least once a week to keep that lubes. I just can't pin point the issue. Please help me

Put the truck in 2 wheel drive and the hubs on auto. Have someone else drive the truck while you look at the u joint. If the joint is turning your auto hub is stuck and that could be why it feels strange in turns.

The seal you see flopping around is only to keep debris out of the axle housing. Another seal is located down the tube at the diff.

The dust seals go away in short order and are nothing to worry about. It's often talked about on this site.

As mentioned, you might have one or both of the locks hung up. If your going to initiate 4WD to "keep things lubed and free" you only have to do it once every month or two. And while your exercising them, after disengaging 4WD back the truck up for 10-20 ft. If the hub hangs, this often frees them.

If the hubs do not turn loose after backing up, than what else can I do?

My dust seals are both busted and my auto setting does not lock up when I put it in 4wd. I have to manually lock the hubs and since I do a ton of snow plowing it hangs up in lock every so often. I just have to back up a bit to make sure they're unlocked. Part of my "to do list" is to service the hubs. I'm sure you have a hub hanging up. Happens to tons of 4x4 hubs not just superduty's. My old 150 did it, an explorer, and my other 250. Another thing is shocks and stabilizer bushings. Check them. They are wear items.

Sounds to me that you are feeling your traction lock rear diff. Your owners manual tells you that you will feel a slight vibration in tight turns at low speed.

Thanks guys. I will check the hubs this weekend. I need to change the rear gear oil anyway. So I will look into the diff lock when I do that.

Thanks again
