A dog coming out of the hole

I have a f-350 with the 6.0L. You can see the specs in my sig.

Generally I am pleased with it. But it has always been pretty doggie coming out of the hole.

Once the rpms are up, 2000 rpms or more, it is very responsive. You can feel and use the horses and torque. But when you are stopped at the light. Or, on a hill with a load. Granny's help is required.

Is it normal to have to use 2000 rpms or better to get it to run "like it should"?

Mine has always lagged from a stop, but once the turbo spools up then it really gets going. I guess its normal and it does suck. If there is one think I could change about my truck's performance would be off the line throttle response. Will be interesiting to see what recommendations there are to fix it. btw my free flowing exhaust and CAI kit did little to help.

Its normal. Its a turbo diesel, its makes power with boost. No boost, no power, there is no boost off idle so thats where the lag comes from. It will never be like a gas engine off idle, just adjust your driving to live with it.
I have a 6sp. manual and its definatly more noticable in the manual tranny trucks.

This is what I figured. I am just not use, even after having the truck for 5 years, to reving the engine up to 1800 or 2000 RPM to get the power.
I have noticed that my Excursion, with an automatic tranny, easily and regularly revs up to 200 rpms when I take off in it.
Thanks for the feedback.

spool up time

The only way to reduce the lag off the line is to speed up how fast the turbo spools up.

Many aftermarket additions will help decrease spool up time: larger intake, large inter-cooler and boost tubes, aftermarket intercooler, cold air kit, and aftermarket exhaust. I'm sure that I'm missing others.....

From the factory.

It is just a feature of turbo lag that one notices because it has a manual tranny.

As I mentioned, the Ex w/ the auto goes to 2000 Rs when one puts his foot into it. But with a manual tranny I am more aware of the need to do so.

It is the difference between diesel w/ a turbo and a gas engine. My 96 Mustang Cobra does not need to Rs like the diesel w/ the turbo does. 2000 Rs in the mustang and you are in the next county in a breath.

Even my non turbo'd 83 6.9 diesel didn't need the 2000 Rs to go. Admittedly is was slow. But the thing would idle up a steep hill in 1st loaded to the top of the bed w/ broken concrete, tools and stuff on the concrete, lumber on the rack, and towing a compressor, without taking a second breath. I know because that is an actual example of what I did one time. And then there was granny below 1st in case you got a real load to deal with. All w/ only 175 horses.

W/ the turbo I just do not have the same power of the 83. And the turbo has 325 horses.

I suppose I am just expressing my disappointment that when I went from 175 HP to 325 HP I expected different performance than what I got.

For people that don't want to tune their trucks and or have a tuner that does not fuel off idle like a custom tune one solution would be to get a boost fooler. This will make the computer fuel early abd spool faster. It also will allow a little more on the top end. Not all tuners have a boost fooler built in. Most sct custom tunes tune out the factory table for fueling to make a snappier throttle. I'm not completely sure what all tuners have "built in" boost foolers in their tuning. The cost of the boost foolers are about $75-100 bucks. Might be a idea to look into. A few months back there was a discussion about boost foolers on one of the forums. Dave at bd was very helpful.
