New to forum. I have read alot of threads on this issue and have seen there are alot of possibilities for puking which i am slowly eliminating. What really baffles me is the strange"tea pot" or "whislte" sound from under the hood. I have tried removing the entire intake tube to the turbo and removing the degas cap but still get this sound. I have talked to a mechanic at a international dealership. He talked about maybe a crack in the y-pipe(not sure where that is) or a leaking exhaust manifold as this is what he found on the medium duty trucks. I was wondering if anybody has found out what truly is responsible for making this noise.
Well i went underneath hood tonight. Found a couple of band clamps loose. Thouht i had it started and took for a test drive.Unfortunatley sound is still there. Had wife come out and power brake while climbed over the engine best ican tell is the sound seems to be coming from the turbo. Really paid attention to when sound was coming on it seems to be from a dead stop to getting up to speed under normal to light acceleration. When i put my foot into it i don't here any noise. Any help would be appreciated. By the way no mods except for an air intake and deleted muffler. Thanks
I would inspect the y-pipe closely. The y-pipe is the exhaust pipes that connect the exhaust manifolds to the turbo. The one on the left side (driver's side) is prone to cracking within the flexible bellows made into it.
Take a nice bright flashlight and shine it in under the degas jug, above the FICM towards the firewall. Look for an accumulation of soot on the firewall around the bellows area.
You can also look up at it from underneath. That will get you a different angle on it.
Take a look at the right side y-pipe too, there is a bellows made onto it that can crack, but is less likely.
Other than that, the gasket between the right side y-pipe and the back of the EGR cooler may be leaking or have a broken clamp. I've also had an upper EGR valve gasket burn through and cause a tea kettle noise.
If you have access, or can talk the Ford dealer into doing it for you, try pumping smoke into the exhaust system. We use an evaporative emissions smoke tester to fill the exhaust with smoke, and a bright flashlight to pinpoint the leak.
Examine the underside of the boot at the compressor side of the turbo. Those boots are known for tearing in that location. Replace with marine grade hose or, if you've got the coin... About Silicone Hoses and Turbo Hoses. Why use silicone hoses

Mine did that when the head gaskets were blown. It was louder right after I ran the truck harder than normal driving, like getting on the freeway. It was whistling out of the cap after the cooling system got over pressurized by the combustion leaking through the head gaskets. It stopped if I drove with the cap loose so it vented easier. Also it was gone after the rebuild.
