Dyno Rollers vs EPA E Check

I have a serious qustion about Dyno machines. We live in Ohio and taking a vehicle to E Check Stations and putting them on rollers is terrible for drive train, according to mechanics. If that is true, I guess the Dyno's are bad too, right? The theory is since the drive train is not pushing the 7800lbs or whatever weight your vehicle is, it is free wheeling. I have read that it is just as bad as free revving an engine in neutral or with the clutch pushed in.
I have had my Harley on a Dyno and seemed to have no ill effect.

Re: Dyno Rollers vs EPA E Check

Dynos, generally, have a resistance mechanism built in. Your vehicle is not free wheeling. And your Ohio test stations maybe the same. Just because you do not see the resistance source does not mean it is not there.

I agree and assumed there is resistance. I am curious to see others input also.

Re: Dyno Rollers vs EPA E Check

Yes, the good dynos are capable of "Loading" up and stressing your truck. Just check out the waiver the dyno shops have you sign. Unless you load a diesel on a dyno it won't make any HP/TQ.

Re: Dyno Rollers vs EPA E Check

Performance checking chassis dynos in commercial shops are typically inertial -- the roller drums have a "calibrated" rotational inertia and thus the dyno computer can calculate HP and torque based on acceleration rates.

Really good chassis dynos as used by automakers are electric or eddy-current dynos where the load can be varied so you can, with proper programming, simulate a variety of conditions from downhill coasting to towing heavy up the side of a mountain.

Emissions-checking rollers are also dynos, but they typically don't load things up to the same level. For starters, you're usually not doing WOT acceleration runs on an emissions-check dyno, but holding a particular engine speed against a small amount of load.

The chassis dynos used to certify emissions and generate EPA fuel-economy numbers (same test) on under-8500-GVWR vehicles are electric dynos that use a programmed load curve based on the "inertia weight" of the vehicle (eg, a 3598 lb vehicle will run in the 3400 lb inertia weight class, a 3602 lb vehicle will run in the 3600 lb inertia weight class) and an aero drag factor based on the drag coefficient and frontal area of the vehicle.

Our diesels are actually emissions-certified on engine dynos at the peak power point (wide-open go-pedal, dyno loaded to hold engine at peak HP rpm, coolant and CAC heat exchangers set to mimic their in-vehicle counterparts for temperature drop), in a "standard atmosphere" of 77 degrees F, 20% relative humidity, and a barometric pressure that escapes me at the moment (usually, they end up correcting to the standard B.P.). This is why we don't have EPA mileage ratings.

This is changing somewhat for 2008 and beyond, with new testing divisions based on vehicle weight, and "footprint" (wheelbase x tread width), and interior volume, and, for all I know, phase of the moon and sunspot activity. My friends who work in OEM compliance departments have been in full-scramble mode since they were announced. They'll meet the deadlines, but it took a lot of work just understanding what exactly they were being asked to meet on some 5-dimensional matrix.

Re: Dyno Rollers vs EPA E Check

It's already been answered, but if you think about it, how could it measure power without resistance?

Re: Dyno Rollers vs EPA E Check

Here in Nevada, they dyno smog test the Diesels-----What the tester is looking for is visible "smoke" under load----there is some resistance on the rollers, or test could not be performed correctly----My truck has been done twice, and they only run it about to 2500 rpms for approx 10 seconds----I feel they are doing no damage to my truck----JMHO---Supercrew632
