early build 04 6.0 questions

I have found the wife a low mileage(<20Kmiles) early build 04 excursion Eddie Bauer 4x4.
What are the things that I need to look for or ask about on this early model 6.0( built 10/03)?
I did an Oassis report and it came back with no red flags.

Thanks,
Brian Moore

Re: early build 04 6.0 questions

Many will advise you to shy away from the early build trucks.... I don't understand why since pretty much all of the early concerns have been addressed and the units, in our area, at least, appear to be very dependable.

Where problems have been arising is in those subsystems that have been re-engineered.... Late model trucks (05 - 07) have been having HPOP concerns with the redesigned high pressure oil system.

The two biggest concerns that I can see.... people that don't have the opportunity to use a diesel to it's best advantage.... and techs that just aren't prepared for the complexity of these engines....

Re: early build 04 6.0 questions

I would still have my 03 if I didnt need a bigger truck for my 5th wheel. Now take it to a certified tech and have it gone over. Other than that, you should be good to go...

Re: early build 04 6.0 questions

I would make an attempt to find out why a low mileage vehicle is on the market. It can range from POS to the former owner just wanting a smaller vehicle. At 20 K , the EGR is probably ready to go, if thye OASIS reports it hasn't happened yet. My post assumes you are talking about a diesel.

Re: early build 04 6.0 questions

Yes, It is a 6.0 Diesel. The owner stated it was used only as a second car/business car. The owner seems to be Honest, but not real diesel freak.

Thanks for all the help.

Re: early build 04 6.0 questions

Sounds like Mrs Cbmoore got herself a new set of wheels. Couple things are going to happen to you. Going to start the motor without waiting for the glow plug light to go out. that makes smoke. number two, you are going to put gas in it . Don't. Those are the two times where you can't have a daydreaming moment, ok ?

Re: early build 04 6.0 questions

If it is a 10/03 build, there is a good possibility that motor is actually a late build '03 motor. As it was my understanding the '04 6.0L's got the '03 motor up till the first week of November 2003. The '04 Harley-Davidsons were supposed to be the first trucks with the updated '04 motor. The H-D's did not start rolling down the line till Novemeber 3, 2003, if I remember right.

Re: early build 04 6.0 questions

Rattler,
We have not got the excursion yet, but I will know by mid-week. Thanks for the advise on the diesel operation. I will make double sure she knows the difference between the diesel/gas pumps.

Thanks,
Brian Moore

Re: early build 04 6.0 questions

When I first got mine, I immediately started having EGR issues. I suspect that had a lot to do with the former owner only using the truck as a daily driver. It hadn't been worked hard a day of its life at that point.

I'd recommend that you have your wife use her new Excursion to haul all of your toys for 'ya.

Re: early build 04 6.0 questions

When we get an ex. it will be used for its intended purpose(towing, etc) as well as a daily driver.

Thanks,
Brian Moore

I believe it was 9/29 or there abouts as I ordered mine after that date to get the new motor. You can check the passenger side valve cover to see either a 2003 or a 2004 sticker to reflect it - thats the easiest way if you don't want to look for the actual changes.

Not exactly correct, but close. I don't know if the first ones with the 04 motor were H-D models or not but the cutoff date on the 03 motor was 09/29/2003. Everything from that date backward has the 03 motor. Everything from 9/30/2003 forward to the end of the 04 model year had the 04 engine.
