EGR cleaning professionally?

Check this out there is a system that cleans not only the egr but the entire EGR system. I wonder if they have adapter for the 6.0?

http://www.bgprod.com/products/fuelair.html#9240

Might be nice for the VW TDI's also thich get the entire EGR tube blocked at times.

Re: EGR cleaning professionally?

Greetings,

Neet find! Have you found out How much?

We need a Mast Cert Die Tech with experience in the big Cats and such and that knows the 6.0 to tell us if this would actually work or be valuable for our trucks.

Then we could buy one by groups and share.

Peace and Blessings

Re: EGR cleaning professionally?

I would be in too. Cleaned my EGR valve about a couple of months ago and last week it started to act up again. The truck lost power, the rpms did not go up past 1200 no matter what throttle and white smoke was pouring out of the pipe. Pulled the EGR again and it was not nearly as bad as the last time but there was a large chunk of soot in the upper chamber, maybe it fell off from within the system somewhere due to me hammering the throttle a little more lately.
Soaked it in gasoline overnight, brushed the egr passage, put everything back, the truck is fine again.

That is why cleaning the valve is not recommended. Once a valve develops a problem it usually continues regardless of cleaning. Built up carbon does cause them to stay open and reduce flow, this is true, however, most concerns take place up inside the solenoid body with carbon getting past the seal. This can cause the valve to stick and also damage the position sensor and actuator. No cleaning will correct that. While the cleaning system is a nice idea and would surely save time, it is intended for gasoline applications. When we need to de carbon an intake it is usually due to extremely heavy deposits that must be scraped out and then flushed. In about half of the instances, the intake has to come off. I have yet to see a plugged EGR cooler but I am sure that is has happened. Having de carboned many intakes and EGR passages I can tell you that the nature of the carbon in a diesel is different than that of a gasoline engine and it is a bear to get clean. The amount of flushing that is required would simply be impracticle and would cause engine damage. The best thing is to use good fuel, a cetane booster and don't idle the truck. Prevention is worth a pound of flushing!

Re: EGR cleaning professionally?

This question has probably been asked before, but...

If cleaning is not recommended, is replacement a simple job? Also, is this a part that is covered through 100K miles? I already had one go bad at about 18K. I don't want to pay Ford to replace them often once my 30K warranty expires.

Yes, and it shuld be covered under the emmissions piece of the warranty if it's past 3 yr or 36 months.

Re: EGR cleaning professionally?

Is the EGR covered past 100k since it's an emmissions related part?

You might be right about the cleaning but like I said, I think the culprit was a large chunk of soot in the upper chamber, which maybe disloged becuase I was giving the truck a few WOTs lately to clean it out.

I don't have much control over how "good" the fuel is, I must trust the gas station.. I have used a fuel conditioner and cetane booster since new. As for idling.. well I do a lot of stop and go for work purposes, so you can say it's the equivalent of driving in heavy rush hour traffic. This is where I have a problem with Ford and the design of this egr system, they should have known that some of these trucks will be idled, not everyone will be using them for hwy towing. Thus this system should have been designed with this in mind, I should not be told that I can't idle or drive in stop 'n go rush hour because my egr valve will clog up or my egr cooler will go south. This has already happened btw.

Ford should give us the option throgh the on board computer to control the time of idle before the "high idle" program kicks in. I'd love to have an option to set it to 1200rpm after 3 mins of idling in park, even if the truck is hot. I'm not sure if that's how the IAC works on the new trucks.. Don't be so quick to start waving your finger of discontent at Ford. I know a lot of you enjoy doing so but this is one problem Ford didn't create. It's not just Ford that has this problem as I understand and it's not as simple as just the "design" of the system. An engine that is not running properly - and or - is not run at full operating temperature consistently is more likely to have a problem with excessive EGR coking. It is somewhat the nature of the beast. Mind you, the forth coming technologies headed our way that will drastically clean up the combustion process will help reduce issues like this.

Re: EGR cleaning professionally?

Does anyone have a "Tutorial" put together on the web somewhere for inspecting/replacing the EGR, so dummies like me can do it in case of emergency.
