EGR Cooler Failure

Can EGR cooler fail all at one time? The reason I ask is the last EGR cooler that went out was a slow leak that turned into a big white smoke show one day. This is what happened. I was driving at about 60 and lost all power like someone shut off a switch. Made it to the shoulder, restarted the truck and the white smoke was billowing out like the typical EGR failure. The truck died again and when I tried to restart the second time it appears to be hydrolocked. Did not try to restart again. No oil/water mix up. Seems to be just the EGR. In this situation is it probable to get any engine damage? Upon the restart there was no knocking or anything. Thanks for everyones help and opinions in advance.

Pull the EGR valve, it's two 8mm bolts and is located in front of the top oil filter housing. I created a thread about how to do it. If you see wetness in there, it's coolant and indicates an EGR cooler failure.

If you let the EGR cooler failure continue, it may cause problems with the oil cooler and other parts since the Engine Oil Temp (EOT) and Engine Coolant Temp (ECT) should remain within 15-25 degrees of each other.

do you mean the EOT and the ECT should be within 15-25 degrees of each other... cause my EOTs are about 200... where as my EGTs are pushin 1200....thats a little more that 15-25

Ummmm...... the poster should have been referring to engine oil temp and ENGINE COOLANT temp.

Original poster... what is "fail at one time"? Is this like "can my shoelace break at one time"? EGR coolers are a high failure item... If you are doing this "out of pocket" replacing the oil cooler insert at the same time as EGR cooler replacement is cheap insurance.

I am sorry I meant to clarify. My last EGR started smoking a little and I was able to make it to dealer. The truck still would run. This one let go and hydrolocked the engine. I guess it was kind of a dumb question. I know that you are not supposed to do EGR modification but when it fails like this it is kind of playing with fire. I have not even got the truck apart yet so I dont know if an EGR cooler is all I need. Could someone PM me about some quality EGR modification models to point me in the right direction ANd thanks for the advice Grampy, you are right. Last time the EGR went I replaced it and in exactly a week the oil cooler went out. Had tear everything down twice.
