Egr Cooler Symptoms

How could one tell if the EGR cooler is failing? I have a coolant/silicone type smell coming from my vents after a shutdown of 2 hours or more. The coolant level doesn't seem to be going down. It is a very noticeable odor. If the heater core goes, would you smell coolant through the vents? I can't physically see any leaks. I just had the EGR valve replaced, the smell seemed to go away but now its back everday. I know I asked this similiar question 2 weeks ago.

60000 miles on it.

Re: Egr Cooler Symptoms

There is a test procedure to check the EGR cooler.... Without this procedure, one can only guess....

Having said that, coolant loss can indicate an EGR cooler failure....but it can also indicate a lot of other things, too....

Re: Egr Cooler Symptoms

Take a look at the EGR cooler hose, located at the back of the oil cooler underneath the hot side CAC pipe connection to the turbo. If it is orange, take a real good look around each end and the block underneath for coolant residue.

When these EGR cooler hoses leak, they tend to only leak while the motor is cool or cooling down, and only when the pressure on the system is relatively low.

Re: Egr Cooler Symptoms

the orange hose sounds interesting as I can only smell it when cool. I will check.

Thanks guys.
