I have a 2004 F250 with the "California Emissions Package". I am looking into doing an EGR Delete, but a friend said I might have a DPFE sensor that would throw a check engine light. I know that if I unplug the EGR Valve it throws CE Light. Does anyone know if I will have to worry about the check engine light?

i hav a 2004 f350 with a late 2003 6.0 i deleted EGR and got no CE light
CA does require smog checks on Diesels (generally - I don't know if some smaller counties are exempt). Some of the things they check is CEL light, all emissions equipment present, excessive smoke.

We have emmision testing on diesels here also. The tech who did my egr delete, amongst other things, told me that my year, mid year 03, will set a code in the ECM but not show a CEL on the dash. With our emmision test a CEL will fail the test but a code in the ECM will not. The only thing that will happen with a code in the ECM is a suggestion from the guy taking your money to have your vehicle checked out. Good luck in California.
Will an EGR delete, on a truck equipped with the California Emissions Package, cause a CEL. I am worried about the CEL because I don't want to have it on. I don't want to have to worry about if the CEL is on for some other reason.
you may remember just how broke the state of California really is.... how's your luck running?
check out the fines for getting caught then check your bank account and roll the dice

Okay, I think you all need to read a little closer. I do NOT live in California, nor do I plan on going to California. The truck that I have, was originally purchased in California by the original owner. I am the 3rd owner, and I live in Nebraska. I'm just wondering, DOES MY TRUCK HAVE A DPFE SENSOR THAT WILL THROW A CEL IF I DO AN EGR DELETE! I DONT CARE ABOUT EMISSIONS TESTS, I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE CEL LIGHT!!!
Well, you did not indicate where you live until post 7...... In your 1st post you asked if you need to worry about a CEL...... YOU also said it throws a light if you unplug your EGR. - What was the question?
So obviously, it will throw a light (per you) if you do an EGR delete and have your EGR unplugged....... I have no idea if you can leave it loose on top of your engine plugged into a valve, or if there is something else that may cause a light. Maybe someone else does....

Max..03 dosen't list dpfe sensor. Don't see listed in 04 changes. Q..I'm not familiar with it, so what's it for ?
DPFE is a pressure differential sensor, I have seen them on gas engines. It is plumbed in the line from the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve. I didn't answer before because I didn't know if the 6.0 had one or not.

General census feels the system looks at how much the valve has actually moved and then it looks at the temperature of the air in the intake. When the valve opens it allows the hotter EGR gases into the intake and in turn the computer looks for an increase in the temperature of the air already in the intake. This has nothing to do with the temperature of the air going though the mass air flow sensor but the air that has already been metered and is physically in the intake. When it calls for the EGR but does not see enough of a temperature increase it sets code "P0401 - low egr flow" (low because it did not see enough of a temperature increase and on 05 and newer will turn on the light. (Mine is on right now. I am waiting to see if it does anything funky. I am amazed how much it calls for the egr. My mileage went up a nice amount after the delete. I now see a consistent 15-16city and 19-20hwy. Big difference from the 10 city i get with my 6.4...)
Here is what you do...if your egr cooler is not leaking pull it out and have a fab shop weld a 35mm freeze plug into both ends and then reinstall it. Since the cooler is in place it will look like a complete system. If you do get a light then you will need to spend the money to get a programmer. The current programs just remove the flags that trigger the use of the egr system. Then the computer just ignores its existence and no codes will be set.
I honestly don't know if the diesels look at the intake temp or pressure. You can plug the EGR cooler as stated earlier but in some cases you need a SCT to keep the light off. As far as smog goes one of the many reasons I bought a diesel was because it did not need smog testing. Later down the road California changed the rules. What really pissed me off is early on I had a converter failure. I replaced it with an aftermarket converter, but as current laws stand now my converter is considered illegal. There are ways around the checks. Now I run a plugged EGR cooler, no cat, Propane injection, aftermarket air cleaner, turbo back exhaust, aftermarket intercooler, and custom tunes and pass the smog test without any problem.
