Engine cough sometimes

This is my first post but I;ve been reading since I bought my truck last week. Its a 03 6.0 SD that was a work truck for Haliburten Energy Corp in Bakersfield Ca.I didn't get any history on it and its got 126K mile's.I did notice that the turbo was a re-manufacture but I think its a stock truck with auto trans.
I changed all the filters yesterday and oil, anti freeze to get a fresh start but today I was running around a bit and the thing starts coughing when on the gas after I left a shop. Then I stop at light ,idle is fine, take off and its OK but engine light is on!This is the second time it had a momentary cough since I got it and I only have 200 mile's on it so far.
This thing is a great running truck 99% of time but what's the deal with cough?Last's less then a mile but can't be good for it.
Thanks Dale in Redondo
PS anyone know how Haliburten is with there fleet maintenance?

If the CEL light is on, it has a code or codes stored. Get them pulled and it will lead you in the right direction.

lol lol!! Good luck with that. The codes will tell you what problems are occuring due to the underlying problem.....but often times those are only the symptoms of the real deal.

Do most 6.0 owners have there own readers? If so which one?I've been reading posts about hesitation when accelerating and it may be my EGR is dirty so I will try and clean it.Thanks for info,Dale

you can often go to places like autozone or similar and get your codes pulled for free.
