Engine cuts out when towing

Last week we went to Sturgis SD towing an 18' open trailer with four motorcycles. We left Cincinnati and before we got to Indianapolis the engine started this problem.
It seemed to sound like a turbo burp and the truck would almost fall dead for a second. I turned on the tow haul and it still did it when the engine was in a grunt. Kind of like it was confused when down shifting or shifting back to a higher gear.
Has anyone else experienced this. It happened several times both to and from Sturgis. The truck never stalled it just stuttered quickly and then cleared up. Some times it would do it 4 or 5 times in a row. I thought it could be an injector but the truck ran smoothly all other time The 6.0 pulled the trailer easily other than the coughs.
\The only mods to the truck are an open element breather and an off road MBRP turbo back pipe.

Thanks, Brian

Re: Engine cuts out when towing

Had similar problem with mine. It took a call to Ford CRC to get the issue resolved. It turned out to be a turbo issue. They tore down my turbo and cleaned it up, lubed and reassembled. Acts like a new truck, but the test comes this weekend pulling my 5th wheel trailer to Bristol Tn. The comment from the dealer was, looks like any truck that has been sitting for any amount of time on the lot. is going to have a possible issue. Re: Engine cuts out when towing

I have a 2004 F-350 SRW crew cab and i pull a 10,000 pound travel trailer and mine was doing the same thing at first like a year ago it would do it once or twice the whole trip and each time i went out it got a little worse but it would only seem to do it when towing so its not going to be easy for the dealer to find i figure so it got real bad i took it in they replaced the VGT on the turbo. went on another trip still did it took it back they replaced the Turbo and Egr valve and man its like a new truck from what i am seeing the vanes in the turbo tend to stick which can cause this problem sounds like a massive amount of air comming from the left side of the engine compartment... its comming out the air box cause its overboosting... and when it does it at least mine anyway it would puff black smoke also..... but anyhow after they put the Turbo and Egr on i took it home and hooked up the trailer and took it out on a 60 mile test pull and it ran like a raped ape... seemed like it had more power then ever... hope this helps....

Re: Engine cuts out when towing

Had the same thing going to Sturgis,(pulling a 16000# toy hauler) found that a frayed wire shorted out the speed sensor, had it replaced, no more problem.

Re: Engine cuts out when towing

My 04 does this and what I found is that it does it when going up a long incline (doesn't have to be very steep - just long) under heavy load. When I don't give it more throttle to keep the speed up (economy mode) it tends to kind of burp and hesitate slightly. It will do this several times. Once I figured this out I just give it a little more throttle and it doesn't do it anymore. I can repeat the problem every time and the tech at my dealer said it does this to dump boost. It's kind of like lugging a gasser.

Just give it more gas up the hills and grin and bear it!
