Well looks like luck has finally caught up to me. This has been a great truck for the past 2 years but now I've got an issue. I have a 2003 6.0L...it's recently developed a bad miss, loss of power, poor fuel economy, and hesitation. It starts funny sometimes, but it's done that since I bought it back in Feb '07.
All of this is intermittent...sometimes it will run great, others it will run horribly. I'm guessing it might be an injector or fuel pump...but I'm not sure. I've thuoght about taking it to the dealership to have them scan it, but I figured I'd check here before I spend 3 arms and a leg just to have them diag it. Everything is stock, except the intake, exhaust, and I have a tuner. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Have you tried removing the tuner and return the truck to "Stock" tune?
Have you tried Fuel/Water remover in a tank or 2 of fuel? Based on the randomness, sounds like water in the tank, I've had that happen before with a bad fill up and plauged me for a while till I used a few bottles of water remover..Been fine ever since..

I haven't yet. I plan on doing fuel filters/oil change this weekend. I used my buddies funnel last time I did oil...is it possible the funnel had something on it and contaminated the oil?
I was also being told that it could be a bad head gasket...but I'm not seeing any smoke or anything.
First of all you need to check if there is any codes . If not, its a guessing game? To me it sounds like its electrical in nature may be a sensor going bad or a bad connection to the (ICP, or IPR.) sensor or a wire shorting out. Like I said its a guessing game.

I personally think the cheapest thing you can do is pay for a scan or you are just throwing parts at it.

Mines acted this way before, and being an '03, its time to check all the grounds on the truck. I simply backed the grounding bolt in and out a few times and cleaned up the connectors til there was raw metal at all the grounding points. This seemed to help me, but also you might try the new fuel filters first.

Well I addressed the miss and loss of power today and took a Ford Tech's advice. I changed oil, oil filter, and fuel filters today. The result was...the truck missing MORE than it was before. I just don't get it. Guess I'm going to have to pay the $198 to have them hook it up to their little machine at the dealership.
My next door neighbor seems to think it could be the fuel pump...the list keeps getting longer.
So lets look at the options...
1. Bad Injector
2. Blown Head Gasket
3. Fuel Pump
4. FICM
5. PCM
6. Transmission
7. EGR System
mines having similar issues too but seems like it gets better as it warms up. my mileage was 14 this last tank with no load. in the summer when i bought the truck i got 16.5 gettin on it but even then i noticed it ran funny. mines not throwing any codes either. im going to get a diesel fuel system cleaning done next sat. ive heard guys that had issues didnt have them anymore after the cleaning. its from Wynn and its a machine. ill let you guys know if it works.

My truck gets better numbers in the summer as probably they all do.It's the nature of the beast, when warmer they burn better, plus winter blend fuel is probably at the pumps already.

I just want this thing to run right...ARGGGG!!!
Sorry to hear..But your original post was like going to the Dr and saying "i have a pain in my body, what could it be?"
More troubleshooting needs to be done on your part to rule things out.
If you truly don't care about spending the $200 then go for it... If not.
Start by removing the tuner (you'll have to anyway in order to bring it to ford anyway, They just don't do a regular obd II scan). Try Injector cleaner/ water remover for diesels.
Check your antifreeze levels (no loss = good head gasket).
If the whole thing is down on power by a large margin, I'd rule out injector, because Missing one cyclinder, you probably wouldn't even notice...Which leads to fuel pump, bad fuel, bad sensor or ficm

Don't overlook the reply about the grounds. I had it happen on my wife's van. It would miss and stumble on some bumps, and some left turns. After about 6 months, I fixed it by redoing the ground for the ECU.

Well I just got back from having my truck scanned. Turns out my original hunch was correct.
The #6 injector is bad. FICM is good, (it was at 48), batteries good, no coolant in the EGR valve or any residue, etc. So it looks like I will be pricing a new injector...I really wanted to do them all whenver I had to replace one, but that's not financially practical right now with the holidays coming up. Anyone know where I can get a reasonably priced injector? Only need one...

Hrmm, was it stuck on? did they say?? I didn't think 1 injector if were not firing would be so noticeable...but maybe I'm thinking on the 7.3l's they weren't
Oh well thanks, I learn all the time something new..

was the injector not working at all or were they functioning fine at idle? hey guys tell me about the Wynns. someone has to have had it done. heres the website.
It was working intermittently...it wasn't working more than it was. I guess it's noticeable on a 6.0L because the motor isn't making the power it was supposed to...and the other 7 injectors are having to make up for it. Also, it confuses the computer because the FICM is saying one thing, and the PCM is saying another, and the transmission got confused...which explains the erratic shift I had the other day.
But the truck is essentially running on 7 cylinders...the tech said something like 12.5% of the power of the motor comes from each injector...so with one out and the others compensating for it (or trying to) then I'm really losing 20 or 30 some percent engine power with this bad injector, along with mileage. Well I ordered a new injector, I'm expecting it to be here at least by Wednesday!
