When I am towing it sounds like my cooling fan will come on then it will increase or decrease in sound with the rpms, somtimes the fan sound will come on and get loud the quiet and keep on going up and down regardless of rpms. it only does this when I am towing something, I've watched my temp guage and its not getting hot. any ideas???????????????????
I have a few friends who have the exact same truck and their trucks
do not have this problem
it sometimes help to know what kind of veh. & what year & what fan your talking about. if your talking about the hydrostatic fan in frt. of the rad. then i'd have to say its normal. the fan is just kicking in & out. if it is a early model 6.0L like a 03 to early 04 then you need to take it to your dealer & have them do a reflash after checking for any fan codes.get back w/ us when you can give us more info. My truck did this again this morning hauling a empty bobcat trailer. its starting to annoy me plus it seems when the fan (or whatever is making that noise) comes on it takes power away. I only have
68,000 miles on it and I bought it used at 50,000 it did not make these sounds when I bought it.
I think it is perfectly normal. Mine does this while towing also. As most have said on this site, the temp gauges, trans and H2O, are more like idiot lights than gauges and do not react like you would expect a gauge to act. Now, my old '96 Chevy gauges actually worked like gauges.

My '05 fan cycles when towing just under 12k worth of boat & trailer. The sound was kind of unnerving when I first heard it. Did a couple 6 hour tows a about 2 weeks ago in 95* heat and high humidity. My impression is it works fine. Comes on before things get noticably hot, varies speed sometimes not dependent on rpm (but seems in sync with egt getting in the 1100 neighborhood), power drops slightly sometimes (engine controller may be reducing output slightly to help cooling??). I'm happy with it. On edit: the fan only came on pulling the bigger hills.
Make sure your coolant level is okay.

I believe the cooling fan 'strategy' was affected by the reflashes. If your neighbor hasn't had the reflash, it may not be coming on as much as those of us who have had the reflash.

the temperature does not seem to matter when hauling. it was coming on when it was 60*. I pulled my 30' 5th wheel 1200mi with a 02
f350 7.3L in 85* weather and the fan never seemed to come on as much as my 04. I can tow my 5th wheel 20 mi with my 04 and my fan will be screaming for half the time

Teebird,
Are you talking about the latest reflash 06E17 and can you tell in fact the fan comes on more often.
Thank you,
Redimix
I notice the fan gets real busy when the ECT gets over 100*C. You can do the Odo trick and cycle thru the menu to get to the coolant temp in Celsius. I notice w/ 05 (had the 06E17 flash) that the fan does seem busier but also doesn't completely lock-up as often as it used to. Seems that reflash made the vistronic respond a little sooner to temperature inputs. FWIW, I've never seen the ECT go above 106*C or the tranny get above 210*F. The cooling system on the 6.0 seems to be something that Ford got right.
