If his trucks runs better after disconnecting the ICP, then it has to be a sensor issue or a high pressure oil issue. It could just be on the oil rail, the fitting or the hpop itself. It really needs to be hooked up to a computer and the readings looked at.

any ideas?

04 6.0 powerstroke has a mind of its own. dies at stoplights on occasion, surges at low rpms and speeds, engine light is on. When accelerating with a heavy foot the engine cuts out like it has a lack of fuel. Thought it was the programmer at first but upon removal the problems continue.

This was a known issue on 03 & 04 models that I fixed on my own truck.
Thanks for this input. I'm going to look over the wire harness this afternoon. BTW...symptoms returned today after about 100 miles. And you are correct, they do seem to be temp related. Below 40 and everything seems fine. Above 40 and that's when the trouble starts. I hope get this solved soon.

high pressure oil problems can and do come and go based on temperature alone. kinda like what he he is seeing. Scan the parameters with a good scan tool. I just went thru all this, thinking it was injectors, the icp etc. Then, my truck wouldnt start at all. It was the HPOP, but any high pressure oil leak will and does exhibit all the symptoms he is seeing, but there is not way of telling without seeing what the actual pressures are at cold and hot conditions.
But, it very well could be a chaffing issue, or any other number of issues including weak batteries, sensors, or any number of other things. Im still leaning towards a high pressure oil issue. I may be wrong.

OK, so here's the dumb question of the evening...what do I do to figure out if I have a high pressure oil problem? Are there specific things I need to check. Will a scan tool give me pressure readings or do I need something else? Or is this best left to the pros at the garage? Thanks for all the advice so far.

a good scan tool will tell you what the high pressure oil readings are. If its out of spec, you will need to have someone air test the system, and listen for leaks. That will tell you roughly where the leak is. Like I said before, it could be the oil rails under the valve covers or on the hpop or fitting itself. IF thats the case. If you have a sensor out, you should be able to pick up the code. If its a voltage issue(doubtful) the scan tool will tell you the voltage that the FICM is seeing. But considering your symptoms, I would start with codes, then HPOP readings, then go from there.

OK, thanks Hooknline. I'll go looking for a buddy with a scan tool for starters. I really appreciate the feedback on this.
