Unhappy Engine Temp. Issue in 04

Hi everyone;

We have a 2004 F350 6.0L. We had the Edge Juice Platinum programmer installed last year because we tow our RV (28ft toyhauler) occasionally. Last year after installation our Engine Temp was always sitting between 185 and 190 degrees, when towing or not towing. This year, well without towing it sometimes hits 202 degrees, and then with towing we've been as high as 224. Our fan kicks in as usual. We took it to the diesel performance shop where they pressure tested the heads etc. We found out the EGR cooler was starting to leak so we had the bypass kit put in. Temp still rises. We have never lost coolant and it always remains the same. The stock gauge on the dash shows the tempature as normal and has never increased. So any suggestions. Oh we had the performance place, replace the Edge modual as we thought it was that...no difference !!! ARGGGGGGGGGH.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing the increase in Temp? Oil Cooler?

I would recommend installing pressure gauge in cooling system to see how fast pressure builds under load. If head gaskets are leaking, you will have cooling fan engaging more often, as heat from combustion enters cooling system.

Also could be reduced flow from water pump. The older models had some reliability issues.

Run the stock tune and see if it changes. Mine is stock tune and Im seeing low 200s and sometimes it will go as high as 215*-216* when it finally heats up all the way, but its been 106* lately. Most of the time its under 200*.

The Fan Clutch engages normally when it starts getting up around 218 or so, other than that. I told hubby to run it in stock mode tomorrow and see if that changes the temps at all. It's driving us both nuts as we are heading out on a roadtrip this Friday hauling our trailer again. We just got back from a trip in which we hauled our Toyhauler up one of the longest hills I've ever driven up and we hit 224. I said to hubby if anything was going to blow it would have on that hill for sure with our trailer...it's a heavy one....and carry's 110 lbs of fresh water. We didn't have the ATV's with us however...probably a good thing.

I would be happy if mine would stay below 230* while towing. Mine usually runs about 210* empty. Both EOT/ECT are within 5* of each other. I can get it up to 240* pulling my 16,000# toyhauler up grades. Mine is an 05.

Those temps are too hot IMO. Sounds like you have a water flow (or air flow restriction).

I agree, but have not figured out what it is.. Oil cooler has been replaced. Egr cooler replaced. EGR Valve is welded shut and uppipe is welded. Replaced the thermostat. Did a coolant flush to make sure I had the correct mix. I have a custom grille but I do not see it preventing air flow. I am going out of town next week, I think I will take it off to see if it makes a difference.

How do you read the temps?

I get the oil temp from a tee on my billet oil filter cap. Coolant is tapped on a plate that is on top of oil cooler.

Lots of good info on this site. Well we are off camping and hubby has been running the truck with the EDGE basically turned off except for the readings. It's been running about 185 to 190 all week. When we leave we will tow the trailer in that mode as well and see how high it hits. I told hubby if it runs at a lower temp while towing in that mode..the EDGE is getting ripped out. I know we have no airflow restrictions, and the rad has been flushed and cleaned of bugs etc...so hopefully all will go well. I will update you all when we get back. Have a great week. Thanks to all of you for your advice and tips...YOU ROCK!

224 is still normal. Any kind of programmer is going to add extra heat (more fuel=more power, more power=more heat). I wouldn't worry about it as long as the coolant temp on the dash reads normal and there is no coolant venting from the degas bottle. Sometimes customers watch the PIDs (gauges/monitors/data) on their tuners too closely and think something is wrong because the values change so much (which is normal). Live data is going to be bouncing all over the place depending on how hard the engine is working (towing, driving up a grade, acceleration, outside temperature).
