It could also be a leak between the exhaust manifolds and the block since there isn't a gasket between them from the factory. Look for soot around the flanges at each cylinder. Mine were leaking and the dealer's shop installed gaskets per a TSB.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I've had the same trouble since I bought mine in 2004.....It was never really bad enough that I considered taking it in for service....
I had the turbo replaced in 2008 at the direction of the dealer (warranty covered) and after about 250 miles, began to notice puffs of soot from under the hood when sitting still, at idle and burping the throttle... And, the smell in the cab is BAD now, much worse than before! I've run the thing for over 10k miles this way, and other than smell, soot deposits (drivers side, below exaust manafold) and occasional sluggish acceleration it runs fine....(yeah, that sounds rediculous!)
I thought maybe the dealer didn't install the Y-pipe correctly when installing the new turbo? How hard is it to replace the Y-pipe?
not too bad. there are 4 bolts that hold it to the manifolds, 2 on each side. head is 10mm and nut is 13mm. replace these when you remove them. your gonnaneed to pull the turbo to get the y pipe out. then there is a heat sheild that bolts to the head and the back of the hpop cover then just pull the pipes out.
