extreme lag and smoke!!!

i have a 2004 6.0. i left louisiana monday and headed towards california. around 600 miles into the trip i noticed a severe turbo lag. it drives fine above 2100 rpms. i stopped to fill up and from idle to about 2100-2200 rpms it would just smoke like crazy, then it would build boost like normal . i can drive the truck at highway speeds, but when i hit and incline it starts to lag and fall on its face. all i have done to the truck is gauges, exhaust, and intake. no programmer. i want a reliable truck for work. im guessin the vanes are stickin or the egr valve is stickin. also when the egts work get above 1200 i could smell a hint of coolant, but when i check the coolant level it seems to be holding. no evidence of puking. thanks james

hopefully u have an 04 motor in an 04 trk...they still put 03 motors(junk) in 04 MY trucks..i have had some in the past with same concern and i found that the ebp sensor tube was clogged with nastys and also the sensor was biased. it should be reading atmospheric pressure (14.7) koeo...it was reading 18.6 koeo....cleaned tube and installed new sensor. good to go....jst my 2 cents.....

i just had this near same exact thing happen to me Satuday night.
I was pulling at 70 mph Tow/Haul mode & Cruse control. I hit an incline and it just wouldn't shift/turbo wouldn't wind up..

Started blowing black smoke bad. was towing a 3100lb race car on a car hauler open trailer.. and normally this hill is nothing..

any info on where to start looking greatly appreciated.

I took tow haul mode off & it seamed to clear up after the 3rd spell..

The first order of business would be to pull your EGR valve. If it is badly plugged, I would replace it (or at least clean it). Whenever you clean the EGR valve, you really need to ensure that the MAP sensor hose and the EBP tube is clear. Note that on vehicles built before Sept 23, 2003 - the EBP sensor is no longer part of the PCM strategy (if you had your PCM updated in late 2004 or up).
