Fan noise?

I get an occasional noise when driving my '05 6.0 PSD.
It sounds like a rush of air, like the ac was on full blast. No loss of power, boost. All temps normal. It only lasts for a couple of seconds. Does it mostly while towing, but I have noticed it a couple of times when not towing.
Dealer can't find anything but I am wondering about the fan. Does it just come on at odd times? And then shut down almost immediately?
I am assuming that it does not run all the time, but what would trigger it if the temps are normal?

Re: Fan noise?

I have noticed the same thing, I chalked up to the fan.

Re: Fan noise?

mine does it when it's hot out (90+) and I have the ac on in traffic.
When I touch the pedal, the fan picks up speed and then disengages.
Maybe trying to cool the AC for me?

Re: Fan noise?

The fan always *turns*, but the fan drive only engages when needed. On warm/hot days with the AC on, it'll engage (at least partially) at stoplights, and when the light changes and you pull away, there's a bit of "flare" that makes some noise until the fan drive can pump out.

Normal stuff. You try to make a 26" fan with a roughly 3" pitch quiet above 1500 rpm or so, without compromising airflow. If you can, let me know and I'll put you in touch with the supplier, who will probably pay you for the patent rights...

I Dave,
I'm a recent forum joiner. I have a 2006 F350 SD with a 6.0 diesel engine and get the same fan noise. It's simply caused by a normal pattern in the cooling system and relates to engine speed, ambient temperature and load conditions. Ford had cooling problems with some of their earlier diesel trucks and took a very 'overboard' approach with the new 6.0 engine. The new design is simply trying to prevent the engine from overheating and everything's quite normal according to my dealer. It does get a bit annoying at times though. Does anyone out there have a similar problem with the new 6.4 diesel? I have a 2009 F350 6.4 on order and wonder if Ford solved this annoying issue.
