Fan noise? Turbo noise? Strange whirring sound!! Any answers? - Diesel Forum

OK...You guys don't hear from me much, but I'm still here...Reading & learning about my truck.

And now I've got a noise I can't identify & I'd like some help from this vast pool of knowledge!

Noise only occurs on upgrades while towing when tranny drops out of overdrive & engine actually begins to "work". Sounds like a siren at the beginning & ultimately sounds like a runaway electric motor or fan. The whirring sound does not always mirror the RPMs, & will only go away when tranny goes back into OD & RPMs drop to 2000 or less AND no longer in a "pull".

Truck has about 16K on the clock, towing about 12,000 & I am currently on my first long trip with it. If it's doing this already in the TX hill country, I shudder to think what it will do when I get to CO!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

That is normal. It is the fan clutch kicking in. It should only do it under certain conditions. I have only heard it two times since I bought mine. Both times it was up a steep grade pulling 7000 lbs.

Yep what he said... The fan is electronically controlled by the computer and is turned on to cool the engine, transmission or charge air (intake boost).
