Filling oil filter canister with oil?

Was changing the oil tonight when I got to thinking... Could I fill the engine with oil by filling the oil canister (the thing that houses the filter)? This way when I start the engine for first time after changing the oil, the oil cooler as well as oil canister and filter wouldn't have to fill with oil before oil started circulating through the internals of the motor. Also, I finally installed my fumoto... I am gonna love this thing, I can tell already.

Re: Filling oil filter canister with oil?

As soon as you take out the filter, a valve opens up on the bottom of the canister dumping the oil into the crankcase (the reason to remover the filter before draining). Refilling at the oil filter canister is only going to save you from opening the oil fill tube and give you a slightly larger filling hole with out a funnel. You will love the fumoto.

Re: Filling oil filter canister with oil?

When I had my '03, I was able to install the filter without the cap which closed the valve on the bottom of the cannister. The oil then was poured over the filter and did fill the cannister and stayed there. After it was full, I would gently screw the cap on and the filter would lock into the cap. Result was a "primed" oil filter.
On the '04, the spring on the valve is strong enough to push the filter back up when it is installed this way, allowing all the oil to drain back into the pan. End result, I can't prime the filter on the '04.
Try the priming method on yours to see if it will work. It has been said many times before, these trucks are snowflakes; no two are alike. Yours may allow you to prime the filter, thus making the initial startup after an oil change a little less painful to the internal parts.

And yes, the fumoto valve makes life much easier when it is time to change the oil.

Re: Filling oil filter canister with oil?

It is a valve that replaces the drain plug in your oil pan. Allows for clean oil change and allows you to take oil samples between oil changes if you like. Picture of one can be seen here: <font color="blue">[fumoto].

Re: Filling oil filter canister with oil?

It's a valve used for easy draining of your oil. It takes the place of your drain plug.

Try a google search.

I use a funnel in the oil fill tube. Works like a charm.
I have never poured any oil in the oil filter canister.
Just seems like a waste of time and if you're not careful,
you could have an accident pouring the oil over the filter.
My oil change takes 15 minutes max.

Re: Filling oil filter canister with oil?

Thanks for the info. I think I will try this with my next oil change. I like the idea of having the oil filter "primed" on the first start up.

I'm a new diesel owner too. What is a Fumoto?
Forget the question. I read further and got the answer to my question.
Thanks anyhow.

Re: Filling oil filter canister with oil?

Curious..I'm gonna try again, but can't figure out how to hold filter down &amp; get cap on without some oil draining. Or is it, some o. does drain but not all which seems more realistic? Just asking...

Like I said, on the '03 the filter fit tight enough on the center post that it held down and closed the drain. The cannister would be full up to the threads when I would put the cap back on.
The '04 has either a stronger spring on the drain valve or a smaller center post, cause it just doesn't work. I'm hoping with time it might get a little weaker and work like the other one did.

Wow, never thought I would have found something I actually liked about the '03...
