Fluid change in a 2004 Diesel f350.

1. What does it take to change the fluid in the automatic tranny for 2004 diesel?
2. Does it have a filter?
3. Is the pan gasket reuseable?
4. What fluid is recommended?
My truck is stock and I am tired of paying Ford 200.00 for this service.

1. To do it properly and get all the fluid out of the torque converter you need a heated flush machine.
2. Yes an external filter, ft-145, behind the front bumper pass. side.
3. yes, but the int. filter only needs changing when rebuilding trans. It stops trees and boulders.
4. Mercon SP only.

Tranny should be flushed every 30,000 miles. I do the ext. filter every 10 to 15,000 miles for peace of mind.

Soooo

What you are saying is that I need to have a shop do this? Most only drain the pan. Therefore, I figure I will end up at FORD paying the 200.00.

i suspect if you were to just drain the pan, and replace that fluid every 10-20K - of course assuming the fluid isnt burned to start, and replace the external filter, that would be pretty good.

Since it's an 04, I would say it's too late for that. And if it is just coming up I would bet the ext. filter is loooong past due. The tranny has an internal t-stat and to properly flush it you need a heated flushing machine. It's the only way to get the old oil out of the torque converter. Draining the pan only gets approx. 8 qts. out leaving app. 10 qts. in the system. I just had mine flushed and the dealer charged me $133.00. Wasn't worth my time or trouble for that price. In fact I would still have them do it if they charged 200. Don't forget Mercon SP fluid only.

Mercon LV is approved for the TorqueShift, and may be the only fluid the dealer will have or use.

LV has been out for close to 2 years...the dealer may not have stocked it.

My dealer which is a fairly large one with a separate parts warehouse up the road has no LV in quarts. I bought a case of SP last week and wanted to try the new fluid.

Register with "my Ford" site and you will be able to print out discount coupons for service work such as fuel filter changes, trans flush, coolant flush etc. I just got a coupon for trans flush for $145 but I change my trans oil (8 qt.) every 10,000 miles.

Don't know where you live but Fritts Ford in Riverside, Ca. did mine 4 weeks ago for 133 with no coupon. The next closest dealer wanted 169.
