Ford Motorcraft OIL

I am very new to the Diesel world so I apologize in advance. I have been told by two different Ford techs that I must use Ford Motorcraft OIL in my 2006 6.0 engine due to faoming agents. They stated that Rotella should not be used. Is this true? I have been letting Frod do the changes but that is starting to get expensive. Thanks very much for your help.

Re: Ford Motorcraft OIL

I have used Delo 400 15W-40 since the first oil change (at 5K) and I haven't had any problems. I do remember hearing that it did have foaming agents, but I never verified this. It'd be good to do your own oil changes as it couldn't be easier on this truck.

Get a Fumoto Valve and to make the drains less painful.

Good luck,

Re: Ford Motorcraft OIL

Welcome to TDS.
Motorcraft is good oil, made to Ford specs by various refiners. As an oil person, believe me, it is NO better than ANY good brand of CI-4+ rated oil. You are being spoofed by your dealer. Rotella is great oil, as is Delo and other major brands.

Re: Ford Motorcraft OIL

I've used Rotella T 15W40 dino oil or Rotella 5W40 synthetic for the last 70,000 miles. No problems here. Shell Rotella is a heavy duty diesel rated oil and is used by a lot of diesel truck fleets. Rotella has anti-foaming agents.

I presently have Chevron Delo 400 15W40 engine oil in my truck right now.

Re: Ford Motorcraft OIL

No, it is NOT true. I would try to find a new dealer that will not lie to you to increase their maintenance sales. If they're lieing to you now, over the least important thing on the truck, what will they tell you if you have a major problem?

You may use ANY CI-4 (+) rated oil in your 6.0 with exceptional results. You may wish to change at a 5k OCI (as many here do), because the 6.0 will "shear" the oil to the equivalent of 30W in the 1st 2000 miles of its life. It does stabilize at 30W.

Rotella is a fine oil. I use Delo 400 because its easy to get and fairly cheap ($40/case of 6gal). I've been using the factory recommended OCI of 7.5k miles and pulled an Oil Analysis (OA) on every change (this is anal on my part, and not really necessary), which have come back with excellent results & recommend I continue with 7.5k. I won't go over that though.

You may use any synthetic you wish, but it is more expesive than Dino. If you have a hard start in cold weather, or experiance romping/surging, I'd try 5W40 Scheaffer's 9000 as one of the better Syns available. You can use AMSOIL, but remember, they do not subscribe to ASI testing, so you are taking thier word that the "meet or exceed" standards.

I would recommend that you change the oil yourself on these trucks. Its one of the easiset, cleanest vehicles I've ever worked on. If you get a Fumoto oil pan valve to replace the factory plug, its even easier.

Good luck w/ your new 6.0!

Re: Ford Motorcraft OIL

The dealer is feeding you a line. Rotella and Delo are diesel specific motor oils and have the proper additives for use with HPOP systems. Remember that the 6.0L is nothing more than a rebadged Navistar / International engine.

Re: Ford Motorcraft OIL

I think the other guys are right your getting fooled by your dealer. Rottela is one of the better off the shelf oils I think you can buy and yes it has anti foaming agents. So don't let them fool you. i would do my own oil changes if I was you. The 6.0 are so easy the only thing that take long is to drain the oil.

Everyone's jumping the guns here. If the tech at your dealer said that, Cool!! That means they are providing the oil for free then...right? They may step back and start stuttering when you ask them for your free Motorcraft oil as they (as representitives of Ford) said must be used. Will they change it for you for free too?

Once they change their position and realize that by that statement they are in violation of consumer laws, you can find several good oils for less money as everyone has mentioned.

Re: Ford Motorcraft OIL

Thanks for all of the help. I thought maybe Ford was using a scare tactic and you all have cleared it up.

FINALLY! A legitimate application of the Magnusen-Moss Warranty Act makes an appearance on TDS!
