Ford's maint. requirements but what is...

Hey gang, I just got a letter from Ford stating, "As the owner of a diesel engine equipped Ford vehicle, your satisfaction is very important to us. In an effort to maximize the longevity of your engine, we want to highlight a few critical maintenance items." They go on to say when I should be changing my oil/ filters along with fuel filters. They also noted that 'coolant strength' was important (antifreeze and anticorrosion). I can understand about some things but when they mention testing coolant strength and the nitrite levels I was puzzled... They go into nitrite levels of 300 and 800 PPM and adding supplemental coolant additive or flushing the radiator with engine cooling systems iron cleaner? My God, I thought I bought a diesel not a Ferrari?! I have had the truck since Dec. 2006 and am 2nd owner. It has 74,000 miles on it and I have NEVER heard of such things. Why now? And what's with the testing? The letter makes me believe I am ridding in the Space Shuttle and my flight is gonna get scrubbed if a cloud fly's over!

LMFAO!! That was my first thought though. I'm going to call the number on the letter and see what the nice folks in Detroit have to say to me about my feelings on this issue.

Got the same letter (Started a thread about it too LOL)....went out and got mine flushed and changed.

If I had to do it again, I would have Ford do it for the piece of mind.

I was just in no more than two weeks ago getting my turbo upgrade along with my turbo oil drain tube as well. I chatted up their senior guy on diesels for about an hour asking all sorts of questions. Real nice guy but I did get a sense of 'Ford-protectionism" Meaning he seemed a bit stand-offish with some questions. Never once did anything like this come out. Did 'WE' get our letters at the same time they notified their folks about this maintenance stuff? Also, well never mind... I'll go look at the link kys03rigger gave me. By the way... where does everyone come up with these screen names?!

Actually, checking/maintaining coolant nitrite levels on diesels is nothing new. I'm only surprised that it's taken Ford this long to make a TSB about it(?) When I had my 7.3 PSD, everyone over on that board was talking about checking coolant all the time and adding some additive from Intl. dealer or NAPA(?)

I used to have some of those little strips that you dip in the coolant and check the color of the paper for PH level(?) I guess that all large and commercial diesel trucks check this all the time.

I think that watching the coolant and even adding a bypass filter is a fairly small price to pay if it really makes a big difference in durability/longevity.
