fuel additive

I used to add marvel mystery oil to my fuel in my old 7.3 to keep my injectors clean, but am hesitant to do the same with my 6.0. Any thoughts...

Re: fuel additive

Thought 1 is that FOMOCO does not approve of anything other than Stanadyne. That is stated in the owners manual. Actually the diesel supplement I think.

Re: fuel additive

Rusty1,
FOMOCO has their own now. I don't know if they make it or if some other co. makes it for them. I have two bottles sitting here, one says cetane booster and performance improver and the other says anti-gel and performance improver. Both bottles are 20oz. and they say they treat up to 125gal. I don't know how much they cost, they were given to me for trial. Right now I use Stanadyne performace and have, since the truck was new. I have 154,500 miles on the motor right now with original injectors and o-rings. Al

Re: fuel additive

RUSTY1,

Yes STANADYNE is the best and as it is recommended by FOMOCO I would highly suspect that is what they are selling under thier own brand.

A lot of us use POWER SERVICE's DIESEL SUPPLEMANT & DIESEL KLEEN
It is available at your local WAL-MART.

POWER SERVICE'S website claim thier additives are the most used diesel additives IN ALL THE WORLD...that's a pretty bald faced claim to make if you can't back that kinda talk up so I am inclined to suspect they are talking true.

I add the DIESEL FUEL SUPPLEMENT whenever I tow & I add DIESEL KLEEN at every oil change.

My old 94' IDI 7.3 injectors cost me $23.95 each when I replaced them.

My 2002 7.3 PowerfulStroke injectors I heard go for $125.00 a throw.

But someone some time ago ssaid the injectors for our 6.0's.....
.
.
.
.
$300.00 each !!!!!!!!!!! That'll be a $2,400.00 bill due on or about 120,000 miles for our trucks!!

So I am trying to keep 'em clean and make 'em last as long as they can....

Re: fuel additive

Rusty,

Anything w/ alcohol in it is a big NO NO for any high pressure injector system. You can't go wrong w/ Stanadyne, but I perfer 5g of biodiesel / tank to help keep it clean & lubricated.

Re: fuel additive

This being my first diesel (6.0), is a fuel additive really necessary?

Re: fuel additive

Maybe yes, maybe no. If you're in a cold area, you might add an anti-gel. Might add some stanadyne ever once in a while. Might use B-20 on a regular basis. It'll help keep the system clean & lubricated.

If you've got a good fuel dealer, you probablly don't need it.

I've been using Stanadyne in both tanks now for 2 years. I really think it runs better and I've had "0" problems since new.

Re: fuel additive

I added Stanadyne to my new 06 with 700 miles and can't tell the difference. If anything, the engine seems louder on cold starts. No increase in MPG. I get anywhere from 13 - 20 and average 15.

Re: fuel additive

1st mistake was you added it on top of a full tank of diesel.
2nd mistake is you never take you're foot out of the floor board.

Regardless in the long run its going to help with the life of you're diesel.

Stanadyne has my vote!

Run it when it gets cold and you'll see a difference. I planned on running it year around but after 2 tanks in warm months (it's hot here) I didn't notice anything noteworthy so I'm waiting for the cold weather again.

Re: fuel additive

Marvel mystery Oil is no mistery.
It is mineral oil with a wintergreen scent and red dye added.
It might have a little benefit in removing buidup in carbureated gas engines using 1960's fuel standards but won't do one dand blamed thing to improve the cleaning characteristics of of #1 or #2 or especially biodiesel fuel.
It is nothing but snake oil. Just like Motorcraft Cetane Booster and Motorcraft Lubricity Improver. They are nothing more than Kerosene with a little shot of lighter fluid.
Stanadyne's product has a definite blend of ingredients that acomplish what it is labeled for. Unless you use bad fuel regularily of let it set in the tank and system for a whole season you aren't going to need anything most likely.
