Fuel contamination and tank vents

When I bought my F550 I questioned these little vents that appear to be able to suck in dust, and the dealer said not to worry.
Now that I've been two years without the truck after the fuel system filled with mud, I'm trying to avoid a repeat.
Why wouldn't there be a filter on these (both tanks)?

I presume I can connect the two (both tanks) white plastic pieces and put a small filter on them, they must be breathers. Right?

What is the metal tube with the pull ring or whatever? I forget if that is venting or a connection of some kind?

What we do... remove the black cap on the tank vent. install a piece of rubber hose and route it to a "safe" area.... I like going to the back of the cab and positioning the end of the hose so it points down. Depending on your terrain/climate, there may be other spots that might prove out better.

The concern with these is from the shape of the aft axle tank (yours is much cleaner that any we see here in the mud belt) allowing mud and water to collect on top.

I don't recall any problems from moisture occuring on the midship tanks... providing a slip tank isn't being used for fuel.

Thanks, that picture was taken when I bought it before putting a body on it. Half of it's use will be in the mud and dust. Assuming I get it running again.
