Fuel dripping from under the truck - rear engine area

I started my truck a couple of mornings ago and noticed some fluid dripping from under the truck, near the rear of the engine. It looked like water so I drove to work. On my way there I had the heater on and could smell a strong fuel smell - couldn't figure it out. This morning I started it up and the same thing happened. I decided to check it out. I got under the truck and touched the large liquid puddle - it was DIESEL FUEL dripping down like crazy. I shut the truck off and took another vehicle to work. I didn't have time to look under the hood.

I have not idea what could cause fuel to drip from under the truck near the rear of the engine/transmission area. I looked at the HFCM under the truck and it looks fine. No leaks or anything. Do you guys have any ideas or has this happened to you???

There is a plug in the back of each head with an oring that caps off the fuel line. My guess would be that you have a bad oring.

If you look at the front of the heads you will see where the fuel line goes into each head, that's the same location on the back of the head.

If I remember correctly it takes a T30 torx bit for the plug. It's not exactly easy to get to with the head in there. I was able to get my hands up there (barely) by removing the exhaust manifolds so I could move the y-pipe some.

i agree, except that it's a 6mm allen wrench for the rear fuel plugs..

I came home from work today to check out the o rings. What I discovered is that the leak seems to be coming from just above or out of the exhaust manifold where it connects to the engine block (passenger side - very rear cylinder). It collects there and drips down. Are there lines above that cylinder or do you think the fuel coming out of the cylinder into the exhaust???? Any ideas??

That's how mine dripped down from those orings. Well let me explain a little more, when I put my heads back on I did not have those plugs in them at all (guess the machine shop took them out). Made quite a mess on the driveway, but it dripped from that same spot for a while.

I don't think it would be coming out of the exhaust, my bet would still be the plugs/o-rings on the back of the heads. Do you see fuel pooling up in the valley of the engine? That's the only other possibility that I can see and then the fuel is running towards the back.

I'm just hoping that I'm not having a valve problem that's allowing the fuel to get past the valve and out the exhaust - then seaping out around the manifold.

You don't, if you did the truck would run like complete s#$%. Double check the allen plugs on the back of the heads. Inspect around the secondary fuel filter housing for leaks. There are about 15 o-rings on that housing that could leak fuel. I've seen fuel leak from those areas, specifically the fuel pressure regulator cover gasket, drip down the valley, following the intake manifold lines, and down the back of the engine. Start from the top and front and work backwards.

Thanks a lot guys!!!! I found the leak around the secondary fuel filter next to the oil filter. Replaced it and the o ring and no leaks. Now all I have to do is get rid of the diesel SMELL that the heater is sucking in. Don't know how that's going to happen yet.

Again THANKS for all the help!!

Simply spray your warm engine down with simple green and rinse with hot water. That will take care of it as best you can do. The rest will disapate in short order. Been there, done that.
